  • Podenca Ibicenco, Valencia – safe foster/adopting home wanted

Valencia Limba 250 3 10 2012Yet another injured, in Valencia. She’s not a year old yet and from what I can make out of the Internet translator, she was bred by a hunter, ran off at the first shots, was picked up by another hunter where the same thing happened. So now she desperately needs a place of safety, where her leg can be examined and treated. She’s been named Limba. The association need to find somewhere safe for her within the next couple of weeks.

PLEASE! We need help! A godfather to pay her costs in a residence, an association to take her, French, German, whatever. Contact: tereadoptasalvaunavida@gmail.com or 645784096

  • Podenco Vidal – Appel des Levriers find his forever home in France

Vidal chained 250This photo was of Vidal, a podenco chained up in a disused building. Luckily he was found and rescued. I’ve finally found out what happened to him.

Vidal was chained to a wall, he tried to free his head from the chain around his neck but it got caught in his mouth and he was then left like that as nobody really bothered with him. He then eventually either broke free or he was turned loose. When he began running around the town centre people saw his plight and the town hall was very pro-active in assisting with his capture and getting him a rescue place. He travelled to France where Sandrine, of Appel of Levriers, placed him in a foster home. The family fell in love with him and adopted him. Here’s a photo of him with his friends, and a stuffed rabit which he adores.

  • Save this podenco in SPA Carcassone, France – saved!

Carcassone podenco 250 Snoop 4 2012Urgent appeals received from a French contact.

‘I am looking for help for a Podenco who is currently in the SPA in Carcassonne. They are a breed very close to my heart since we rescued one from Spain two years ago, who had been very badly beaten, and we have managed to bring back her joy to live and we adore her – she will never leave us till her life is done!

I have too many rescue dogs here at home (12) to be able to help Snoop, the Podenco in Carcassonne SPA, but I’m desperate for him to find a foster home because he’s ill and needs help to recover.

  • Podencas urgently needing foster/forever families – L’Europe des Levriers appeal

Libre 190 EDL 11 2011These two beautiful podencas are looking for foster families or, even better, forever families. L’Europe des Levriers want to get them out of Spain as soon as possible. If you can take one of them, please contact Katia.

Alana is white, 11 months old, 72cm high to the shoulder, great with cats and dogs, beautiful character and not traumatised atall.

Libre urgently needs somewhere because she is living not far from her ‘torturer’. She is smaller than Alana, 60cm to the shoulder, calm and happy (surprisingly after her maltreatment).

  • Podenca Andaluz Bebe – a hard day playing on the beach!

Bebe asleep 190A couple of weeks ago we took our latest foster galgo to the UK to his forever home. After 15 months with foster dogs, we are back to our own 4 permanent residents. So we decided to take them to the beach at the weekend. Les Conches is on the west coast of France, just above the port of La Rochelle. There is little habitation and miles and miles of sandy beach. It was a glorious day, wall-to-wall blue skies and the dogs loved it. The galgas ran free for the first time, although we didn’t risk letting little Podenca Andaluz Bebe off the long lead. But she paddled and jumped waves and enjoyed herself just as much as the others.

As Bebe is such a little bundle of energy (she is a miniature Podenca Andaluz), it’s not very often that she is completely tired out – but a day at the beach proved more than enough – as you can see from the photo of her fast asleep on the sofa next to me!

  • Portuguese Podenca Sonia – a forever home at last

Sonia Betty AMCF July 2011 250 A story with a Happy Ending. This is Sonia, a Podenco Portuguese, who spent most of the 12 years of her life in a shelter in Portugal. Last month her dream of a forever home came true when she was adopted into a loving home to join 5 more podencos, plus other oldies!

She was adopted from the association Aanifeira. I’ve only just learnt about them from Betty, who adopted Sonia to join her family of oldies, but I hope to get more information about their work.

  • Podenca Estrella, survivor of the Jaen killing station

Estrella and Angie in Jaen 190 I've fostered quite a few podencos, mostly the rough-haired type, from mainland Spain.  One of the most beautiful stories is that of Estrella.  In December 2009 I posted a picture on Galgo News of 3 galgas and a podenca in a cell in the killing station in Jaen.  Rescue of the 3 galgas was arranged but somehow the podenca was overlooked.  I received an appeal from across the ocean in Canada – the podenca is still in Jaen, can you get her out?

So the wheels were speedily set in motion and the podenca was rescued and taken to a refuge.  An association with whom I work closely, L'Europe des Levriers, then agreed to help get the podenca from Jaen to Madrid, from where I could collect her, along with other galgos we were bringing out to France for rehoming.  So there we were, at the beginning of February 2010, meeting up with Estrella – as the podenca had been named – to bring her home to foster.

  • Podencas needing forever homes – can you help?

Aminda 2 Phoenix 01 2011 190 Mindy and Roda are two gorgeous young podencas which are now in foster care in France and desperately looking for their forever homes.  Here's the story of how they came to be in France.

If you can offer either of them the rest of their life in a forever home, where they will give you total devotion, please contact Phoenix Association.

You may not know the breed Podenco but they are a sighthound, like the Pharoah Hound, and are subject to bad treatment and abandonment by the Spanish hunters.  For most in shelters on the Spanish Islands, forever homes in mainland Europe is their only hope of life outside the shelter. They are an extremely loyal breed and make fantastic companions.
