  • From Pyramid to Perrera – the Story of the Podenco

This is my definitive guide to the Podenco – how they went from revered companions to royalty to on death row in a Spanish perrera.  There are several different types of podenco, depending on whereabouts in Spain and the Spanish Islands they come from  This is the perfect Xmas present for anyone wanting to know more about the Podenco.

All sale proceeds are donated to appeals for help with vet fees from Spanish rescue associations.

  • SARA Lanzarote – saving the podencos in the Canary Islands

SARA Janubio 170 12 2013To animals, every day is the same, there are no fete days, bank holidays, Easter, Christmas. Their main concern is a warm bed, food and fresh water, and caring hands. Many people will have whizzed off to the Canary Islands for Christmas in the sun – spare a thought for all the volunteers working to look after all the abandoned and rescued dogs – specially the podencos – most of whom will spend their lives in a refuge unless they are adopted abroad.

Sara Protectora on Lanzarote has over 150 dogs and 70 cats. Read more about their work here – click on the Union Jack for the english pages. More on their work here and a photo album

  • Urgent appeal for podencos in Tenerife

Tenerife Tierra Blanca 250 13 12 2013Regular readers will know I always mention the refuges in the Canary Islands and the podencos there whose main hope of a forever home is on mainland Europe. Now there is terrible news from of the shelters.

There has been torrential rain in Tenerife and the refuge Tierra Blanca has suffered badly with flooding. If anyone would like to help a podenco to have a shelter from the elements, below is more information and an translation from María Isabel Padilla Peraza vet and manager of Tierra blanca.

We currently have over 130 Podencos in our patio area , an open area that has been devastated by rain. Right now we are constructing the area , but besides building costs we need funds to buy shelters.

  • SARA Protectora, Lanzarote – saving dogs

SARA Protectora clavel 170 9 2013The Canary Island podencos have a very hard life and here’s just one example. Meet Clavel, or Carnation in English. Here is what SARA say.

Clavel is the name we have given to this little male podenco, which the owner brought to our premises on the order of Seprona, who went to the house to process the complaint. They ordered that the dog be taken to our kennels to be treated and of course to be found a new home. The owner knew that the eye had been bad for a long time and that as of course it hadn’t been treated, the eye just exploded, with all the suffering that entails.

It was necessary to remove the eye and now he is recuperating from the operation.

Thank you to Seprona for taking action for this little dog and bringing him to us so that he can be treated.

If you would like to offer Clavel a loving forever home, contact SARA Protectora.

  • Animales Rioja – podencos desperately needing foster and forever homes

Rioja%20Pele%20and%20Mele%20Manetos%20250Further to the appeal from Animales Rioja for donations to pay for kennel fees now they have had to move their 70 dogs into kennels, below are the lovely podencos which they rescued from the perrera. Pilar says ‘they were rescued by our organization many months ago, but we have not enough money to feed them or pay vet fees because we have no association helping us – our only income is adoption money. That’s why we need the dogs to find families and for Podencos it is so difficult!

These two above are Pele and Mele, brothers, Podenco Maneto – which is a small type, dachshund size and shape. Lugo (1st below) is also a Podenco Maneto. Order below is Lugo, Eyes, Tita, Paula, Risi and Toby – all young dogs with a long life ahead of them.

To donate, details here. To apply to adopt a dog, contact Pilar. Preferably associations or people who have already adopted from an association.

  • Beautiful Amelia – a x podenco/galgo waiting for her forever

Bev Amelia x pod 250 1 1 2013This is Amelia, one of the dogs that went to Bev Farmer in Murcia, from Sandra Baas at Villa del Rio, Cordoba.

Amelia is a Podenco/Glago cross, highly prized by the hunters. She has spent over a year in a shelter. I have no idea why she has not been adopted yet, as she is one of the sweetest loving obedient dogs I have ever encountered.

  • Podenco stray in Solano, Valencia – urgently needed to get him off the streets

Urgent: Sweet William needs a foster or forever home. Can you help???
    Call Diane 664 585 275

This stunning boy (see pix below)is a malnourished stray in Solano. Between 1 and 2 years old. We are desperate to get him a foster home to give us the time to find him a forever home. Believed to have been dumped when his owners moved away. He will be vaccinated and neutered soon.

This is an amazing looking dog, he is very friendly and obviously used to being a pet. Still very skinny, he is doing well and the vet says he will make a full recovery. He adores people and is great with other dogs. He is very gentle and sweet and just wants someone of his very own to love.

  • Valencia killing station – Please give these podencos the Gift of Life for Christmas

Valencia perrera podencos 250 12 2012Podencos in Valencia killing station, please is there an association which can save them?

Two podencos – the little podenca puppy (the taller brown) is still inside but no one asks for her. She is loving and very curious, super funny with hazel eyes, if you look you see the pain that she feels.

The petite podenquita tan, is female, six years old, the owner does not want it, too old to hunt. She is a bit timid, but she’s a lovely dog, loving and kind. Hopefully someone will notice her.

(Pic below) The Galgo has left but the smooth Ibizan is still there. She is young, super affectionate, gentle and playful, about 8 months old.
