  • Happy Endings for two little podencos

I’m pleased to report that Lucia, the little podenca with the terrible scar on her back, has already been reserved and will be going to her forever home in the USA. And Dobby, the podenco on death row, is hopefully going to a forever home in Belgium. Here is a lovely video of him in his foster home. Thank you to Galgos del Sol for saving them.

Sadly there are thousands of puppies on death row throughout the perreras of Spain; we can’t help them all, we just focus on the galgos and podencos. Action is long overdue to stop the over breeding of dogs for material gain and those born to abandoned un-neutered bitches.

  • Podenca Canario Mami – saved from starvation on Gran Canaria

Mami 1 Peter Pod 250 09 2011 It’s easy to overlook that the popular holiday desinations of Ibiza and the Canary Islands are also part of Spain. Whilst Ibiza is quite close to the mainland, the Canary Islands are down in the Atlantic off the coast of West Africa. Life on these islands is hard for the animals – many used by tourists – whilst hundreds of others are used for hunting. Luckily there are rescue associations picking up the pieces, but the only hope of a life for an animal outside an animal shelter or refuge is to be adopted on mainland Europe.

This is the story of Mami, a Podenco Canario, whose mouth was taped up before she was dumped in the mountains on Gran Canaria, abandoned to a slow and painful death.

  • Ibizan Hound Jasper – saved on the Costa Blanca – an ambassador for the breed

Jasper puppy 1 250 Megan Brown 08 2011 Such a cute little pup, born to an abandoned podenca at Javea, Costa Blanca. Introducing Podenco Ibizan Hound – Jasper. Megan tells his story.

‘All my life I have wanted a dog, but work and travel commitments prevented me from doing so. When we moved to Spain I decided the time was right and fate must have heard me say so, because we spotted an advert in our local paper for podenco puppies available mid January (2009), just in time for my birthday!

  • Red and Buzz – two happy endings for abandoned podencos

Silvia Red 1 250 08 2011 Red is one of the podencos featured on my FB page Help the Podencos. He has been in the care of Silvia of Galgo Connection Spain since his rescue – this is the picture from when he was rescued, see the photos of him now in his forever home at the end of this post, isn’t he just soooo handsome!

And this is an amazing story about saving a miniature Podenco Andaluz in Miami. His forever Mom tells the story.

Deven Soto podenco Buzz 250 08 2011 ‘Miami, Florida USA; a Mecca of unwanted pets. Miami Dade animal services intakes up to 200 pets per day, and with lines out the door at opening, people are dumping their pets and turning in strays…it can only lead to high euthanasia rate- about 150 per day.

  • TARA Podenco Pico – finds his forever home on Gran Canaria

Eva and Pico 190 TARA Gran Canaria 08 2011 Look at this fabulous photo. We all love a happy ending and here is one for Pico, one of the TARA Gran Canaria podencos. Here’s what Brian says.

‘This photo is of The Best Little Dog Shelter in Paradise’s beautiful Eva and her gorgeous new baby boy! Too cute for words!

Eva, The Vigilent Volunteer of the Year 2011, from the beginning was a wonderful foster mother for many of the little canine cuties from The Best Little Dog Shelter, and wisely swore never to fall head over heals in love with any of her wards, to keep her fostering efforts a pristine example of what grand fostering is all about — love and release!

  • Podenco X Batman, finding forever in the UK

Batman Pod x GSD 190 Cath Morton July 2011 This is a lovely rehoming story about Batman, a podenco x german shepherd, who found his forever home in the UK with Catherine Morton.

‘I adopted Batman, a GSD x Podenco from SOS Animals (www.sos-animals.org.uk) on 8th December 2010. I saw his picture and appeal for a home on a sighthound forum and was totally smitten.

He had been in a Spanish Shelter (SOS Animals) for 6 years and was being given a chance at finding a home in the UK. He made the 48 hour journey, along with another 14 dogs who were fortunate enough to find homes in the UK and I travelled to finally meet him with 2 of my existing dogs. Luckily they got on like a house on fire so home he came.

  • Podenca Canario Dexie – safe in Mogan, Gran Canario, thanks to TARA

Mogan%20Dexie 250 july 2011 Here is a Happy Tail to beautifully highlight the wonderful work of Sylvia and Eva at The Best Little Dog Shelter in Paradise (Mogan Pound):

Dexie is a 4-5 month old Spirit of Gran Canaria (Podenco Canario) that got the old dumpskee because she is broken – a busted leg. No good for hunting rabbits, therefore off with her head!

Sylvia stepped in with a mighty, “Not on my watch, boys!” Dr. Javier Castellano Vergara, Guancha God of Dumped Dogs, offered to do all the doctoring at cost.

  • Portuguese Podenca Sonia – a forever home at last

Sonia Betty AMCF July 2011 250 A story with a Happy Ending. This is Sonia, a Podenco Portuguese, who spent most of the 12 years of her life in a shelter in Portugal. Last month her dream of a forever home came true when she was adopted into a loving home to join 5 more podencos, plus other oldies!

She was adopted from the association Aanifeira. I’ve only just learnt about them from Betty, who adopted Sonia to join her family of oldies, but I hope to get more information about their work.

  • Podenca Resu – rescued by Pro-Galgo, safe in their hands

Resu start 1 resu04 Pro-Galgo 250 This is the story of Resu, a podenca rescued by Pro-Galgo. Here’s what Mo Swatek says.

‘Resu was found heavily pregnant, starving with a badly broken leg. She was totaly bloated because of the accident, the puppies had died in her womb and she was already suffering the consequences of septicemia. During the emergency caesarian, her heart stopped 3 times but the vets managed to bring her back to life. She was called RESU from resurrection. WHAT A FIGHTER OUR PODENCO GIRL.
