  • Canary Islands podencos suffer horrendous abuse

    Lanzarote podencos 7 2025 350
Indignation in Caleta de Famara: Inaction against animal abuse. In Famara, from Ademal Lanzarote

Under the scorching sun of Famara, a lonely cry breaks our soul. At least four podenches remain locked in a windowless “dungeon,” where the only consolation is a beam of light from the ceiling. Their suffering is palpable.

Despite having formally reported this situation on June 18, with witnesses corroborating the abuse and prior complaints against the same owner, inaction is the only response we have received. Desperation grows day by day as nothing changes.

We can’t look away. These animals deserve to be saved.

Share so that your outcry is heard and the authorities act.

  • Podenca Kaori with Galgos del Sur

    KAORA 350
    From Galgos del Sur

Kaori is a beautiful, 6 year old big-eyed podenca dog we rescued from an olive grove in the middle of winter, terrified as she tried to protect the puppies she’d just given birth to from the cold. She probably belonged to a hunter who would use her for breeding for years, and when she was no longer useful to him, he abandoned her regardless of her condition. Thus, Kaori is a dog with many insecurities when it comes to interacting with people, and the shelter is too stressful a place for dogs like her, so her development is completely stalled here.

  • Treating eye infection in your dog

The third eye of my Podenca Andaluz Rosie came up at the beginning of last week. She lost her appetite and was quite depressed. The third eyelid covered half of her right eye, so I took her off to see my lovely Dutch vet Hetty. After checking for grass seed or rose thorn, neither of which she found, she prescribed eye ointment Chloramphenicol 1.0%. Researching it on the Internet, as one does, it is described as an ointment for treating conjunctivitis in humans. However, on some veterinary websites, it is the recommended treatment.

I trust Hetty implicitly so followed her advice to clean round Rosie’s eye and apply the ointment 4x/day and to get back in touch with her in 2 weeks if there was still a problem. I have followed instructions religiously and have to say that Rosie is the perfect patient. She sits quietly, as though she knows I am trying to help her.

  • EU votes for animals (some animals) – report from Eurogroup for Animals

On 19th June at 12:30, the European Parliament adopted its position on the proposal on cats and dogs with 457 votes in favor, 17 against and 86 abstentions.

    Hounds aren’t excluded.

The outcome is generally excellent for our pets.

Despite months of ups and downs and an endless list of exemptions, a sufficient majority of European Parliament MPs fulfilled their promises and ambitions, and continues the fight against the illegal trade of animals for their protection.

  • Plataforma NAC – still fighting for Spain’s hunting dogs

    PNAC 19 June 350
The European Commission forgets about hunting dogs. Key Vote in the European Parliament and Next Steps.

On June 19, the European Parliament will vote in plenary session an important proposal. Following this vote, negotiations will begin with the European Commission and the Council of the European Union, the latter composed by the ministers of the Member States.

This day is crucial as Parliament still has the opportunity to rectify any shortcomings of the Agriculture Commission and ensure that both dogs and cats receive the adequate protection they deserve.

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – a tail of 2 podencos

    GRA Oreo 2 350
From Sandy at Galgos Rescue Almeria

The story of Oreo – a guardian angel on four legs. On January 18th, we welcomed a special boy to our Rescue Center. A dog with a big heart and a backpack of his past. We named him Oreo.

Oreo’s story begins in a lonely place, in the dry and deserted Campo region of Cartagena. As a young dog, he was dumped there, left without help or hope. He had to survive on his own, looking for food, water and safety. One day, Oreo witnessed something terrible. A young Podenco – also dumped and vulnerable – was attacked and cornered by a group of feral dogs. Oreo, despite his own fears and insecurities, didn’t hesitate for a second. He listened to his heart and came to the dog’s aid. That day, he saved a life.
