  • Axarquia Animal rescue – podencos waiting for forever homes.

    Axarquia Tico 400 1 1 2018
This is Tico, one of the gorgeous podencos with Axarquaia Animal Rescue – he’s been waiting too long for a forever home. Tico was rescued after being thrown or dropped over a fence into someone’s garden. He was only half his current weight – literally just skin and bones – and clung to the leg of the person who found him. He was scared and very hungry. He’s now a healthy, happy dog with a beautiful coat and almond shaped eyes. His foster home reports he is super sweet natured. He loves having his belly rubbed and enjoys his toys, especially the kong. He likes cuddles and he loves to sleep in every morning.

  • URGENT APPEAL FOR HELP FOR PEPI’S DOGS

    Tuesday podenca 400
As you know, for over 10 years I have publicised the plight of the galgos and podencos of Spain and fundraised for several rescue associations. In latter years David and I have fundraised and supported Pepis Dog Refuge, Pedrera, Spain, as Jane and Alan Brian coped with up to 80 dogs dumped on them by the locals. They have both suffered ill health, Alan with heart problems, Jane with back problems, but the dogs always came first. Last September they decided to ‘retire’ and Rachael Lepage has worked hard to rehome the dogs.

Last week Jane suffered a massive heart attack and was rushed into hospital. Rachael Lepaege has rehomed many Pepis dogs in the UK and is taking the remaining 9 Pepis dogs this week. This is going to cost thousands and so I am asking all my friends to donate something…no matter how small an amount…and share this appeal. Here’s what Rachael says.

  • Benidorm/Alicante – podenca rescued from the road needs a shelter

    Gilly podenca 2
The following message arrived in my Inbox from a lady living in the mountains inland from Benidorm/Alicante. At the moment the podenca is safe but she needs to go to a shelter for an association to help home her. Please contact Gilly if you can help.

‘Wwe rescued a podenco from the side of the road a couple of days ago. She looked as though she was injured, we managed to get her into the car and had her checked by our vet. The injury is an old one and has calloused over causing her to limp when walking and leaving her with a big lump on her knee.

She is young, about 2. Had no problems that the vet could see apart from the healed injury. She has not been blood tested yet but we will get that done as a priority and then get her vaccinated. She deserves more than being in a pen for the rest of her life.

Is there an association which can take her please.’

  • La Palma podencos update

    La Palma dog 5 400
In this link, the report is that the Local Poll.ice say the dogs are in good condition, it is in the area of Maldona on La Palma. However, because of the photos circulated by Aanipal on Social Media, the Mayor of Santa Cruze was forced to take action, the owner of the dogs gave temporary access and there is a lawyer appointed to mediate between Aanipal and the owner. (Apparently there are other caves on the Island where dogs are incarcerated in these conditions!)

5 podencos were rescued from the mountain prison. One has severe dermatitis skin problems and Aanipal are appealing for donations of salmon to feed her and other dogs suffering the same problem. I have asked for a contact for where to send it, as they are only on facebook. Here are the latest photos below of the 5 podencos enjoying the sunshine, plus pups with one of the bitches!

    Here’s what Aanipal say.

‘We need some salmon for her. She’s the skinny one who came and also has skin dermatitis.

It is not the only animal we have in the shelter which needs this kind of feed for its skin, which we are spending quickly. If anyone can get us some bags, we appreciate it from heart

We would like to make the following clarifications:

Here is a google translation of the update on the rescue from the Aanipal Association facebook page.

‘We do not want to leave anyone in the inkwell who took part in this.

To the mayor of Santa Cruz de La Palma Sergio Matos for mobilizing to this situation and seeking legal advice, to counsel Sandra Barrero for advising and mediating between the two parties, to the complainants of this problem, to all the people who have echoed Of this case (we have received messages of support from Los Angeles, France, etc. ), the police who accepted the order of the mayor and the holder who signed the temporary assignment of the animals.

All of this has been a job for many, and at the end we have managed to improve the conditions of these animals. Granite to granite will make a mountain walking together for animal welfare’

  • Update on the La Palma podencos

    La Palma dogs out 1 400 23 3 2018
From the Association Aanipal who got the dogs out on 23/3/2018

‘We want to thank the city hall of Santa Cruz de la palma for achieving the transfer (temporary) of these animals to our association. This means that we will have custody of these podencos until their legal owners provide a suitable space for them.

So far, that’s all we could get.

Today we will publish the pictures of the animals, last night we were out of strength.

Thank you all for the support
