Podenca Tilly gets her ear cleaned!
Those of you who have a copy of my book From Pyramid to Perrera will know Tilly, Bev Farmer’s beloved podenca who is now 17. Recently Bev took in a stray kitten.
‘Josephine thought an ear massage might be nice for Tilly I’m not sure it was very relaxing for her. But amazed she was so tolerant for a dog that has hated cats her entire life even all these years she can still surprise me.’

Podenco Friends – saving the hounds in the terrible storms
From Bev Farmer. I had the pleasure of meeting her friend Janette when I visited Bev a few years ago. This is what happened during one of the worst storms to hit Andalucia. Sadly storms are still forecast to hit the region.‘Just before the big storms hit us in Spain Janette Lopez was contacted by a local perrera 7 galgos and a Podenco had been handed in by a Galguero and could she help .. Her rescue is mainly local adoptions of family type dogs and she doesn’t get much interest in sighthounds. So she asked me if I could team up with her and help with them .. No problem Janette ….
Then a couple of days later I was asked if we could help with a galga who had just given birth in a disused finca surround by rubbish. 3 pups had already died and it was a matter of urgency to get them to safety .. I had no space here to take them so Janette took them. At the time it seemed all manageable, 15 dogs. Then disaster struck and one of the worst Gota Frias recorded in the region hit .. Janette’s rescue was badly flooded and a lot of damage. On top of that she took in 27 dogs displaced because of the storms plus a couple of goats and to date only a couple of people have come forward to claim them.

El Amigo Fiel Cordoba – another association helping podencos and galgos
Just learnt about this association in Cordoba. It is encouraging to me that, since I started my involvement with the galgos and podencos back in 2007, so many new shelters and associations have been formed, so many more people caring for these wonderful but abused hounds.

The sacrifice of dogs when they are not used for hunting continues to be an extended practice in some areas of Spain. An example of this is the investigation being carried out by the Civil Guard in Tierra de Barros (Badajoz), which has opened proceedings against 12 residents of the region for the killing of 46 dogs .The Benemérita, who has brought the proceedings brought to justice, accuses these people of a crime of animal abuse. Among those investigated, there is a veterinary doctor from the region of La Paz, who is also charged with a crime of documentary falsification, as reported by the Civil Guard .
First inquiries – The case was uncovered with the finding of a dog corpse next to a bag of bones

Dogs with dementia – canine cognitive disorder
I recently wrote about my elderley (14 years) galga developing dementia after a stroke a year ago. Here’s an article in the Whole Dog Journal about the problem, with links to a book if you are interested in learning more.
‘Here’s how to love and care for a dog with dementia
Recognize the signs of dementia earlier so you can take steps to slow the process.
Is your dog pacing in circles, barking for no apparent reason, or forgetting his housetraining? Is he starting to get stuck in corners, stare at walls, or act a little distant? These and other behavioral changes may indicate that your dog is developing canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD), a disease akin to Alzheimer’s.It’s been estimated that more than 14% of pet dogs over the age of 8 show some symptoms of age-related cognitive dysfunction – and a whopping 68% of dogs aged 15 to 16 years have symptoms of cognitive impairment. Some pet owners might joke about “doggie Alzheimer’s,” but this degenerative brain disease is a real thing.

The Criminal Court number 11 of Malaga has convicted the owner of a podenco who died after being locked in his van for several consecutive days in Casabermeja. In the sentence it is considered proven that the man, hunter and rehalero (this is a man who hires out dogs for hunting), was aware that the animal had been diagnosed with leishmania and that it needed urgent treatment to stay alive. The judge imposes a sentence of twelve months in prison and a ban on working in any trade that is related to the treatment of animals. In addition, the magistrate requires him to pay 600 euros to the animal protection association Ladram, whose owners denounced the facts and welcomed the dog, in order to support it.
