  • Podencos with SARA Protectora Lanzarote – hoping for their forever homes.

    Pronto is a 9 year old black Podenco x languishing in the SARA shelter on Lanzarote.  Lola in the middle above is 12 years old. It’s a very hard life for hunting dogs in the Canary Islands and their only hope of forever homes is on mainland Europe.  They are 2 of a dozen beautiful podencos who are the ‘invisible’ ones on Lanzarote, most only 2 or 3 years old.  Don’t let them spend all their lives in a shelter..  Click down this weblink to see them all.  Pictures below.

    SOS Podenco Rescue was established in 2013 and since then has been successful in rehoming many rescue podencos.  Read the story behind the association on this weblink

    Podencos make wonderful companions.  There are several different types of the breed from the small Maneto and Erbana up to the Campanero but the most usual are the Ibicenco and Andaluz.  Some of them do have a strong prey drive, but most are also incredibly loyal dogs and will reward their adopter with devotion.  They are also very active dogs and excel at agility and canicross.

    Introducing Podenco Pedro, who has been waiting for over a year in the shelter where he is very unhappy.

    Blood test: yes, test negative for Mediterranean diseases.

    This is a desperate situation we have with a little angel named Dylan. He was rescued from the perrera and had suffered a lot but was a love nonetheless.. Currently in residence for almost 1 year.. the problem arises now that the residence is 150 dogs and we can no longer pay it because we have few sponsors. Desperately looking for sponsors to not change his residence where he is fully integrated and we hope he leaves already with an adopted family and not produce a trauma with a change to the poor angel… If anyone who might want to be Dylan’s sponsor please let me know and I’ll remind you that everything adds up… Thank you

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – end of a busy year

    2025 is slowly closing its doors and making room for a new chapter: 2026.

    The past year was one of ups and downs. We faced unexpected setbacks and intense emotions, but also countless beautiful moments, shared with the special dogs who crossed our path. It was a hectic year that flew by, yet one we look back on with warm and grateful hearts.

    We think back to all the D-days: those unforgettable moments when our beloved dogs packed their bags to meet their new families. No fewer than 177 dogs found their happiness this year. A result we could only dream of, and one that was made possible thanks to our amazing partners: Associazione ZAC Odv , Un Levriero per la Vita, Project Galgo, Vegrennen EV, Simona Norkute (Lithuania), Helping Animals Almanzora, Friends of Mazarrón Animals, Stichting Wereldhonden, and of course you—our loyal supporters.   • Podenco Pepe terrified of storms

    What a night we had recently, a huge thunderstorm in the early hours the type of thunder that makes your windows rattle and a sky full of lightning .. then the rain lots of it .  Normally it’s not a problem, the dogs don’t take any notice and sleep through it. Not for Pepe, he was in a mega panic crashing into everything . He had been unsettled throughout the day I wonder if he sensed the storm was coming? I couldn’t comfort him in any way I just kept walking him around the house for about 3 hours.  About 6 am the storm cleared and in a few minutes he was calm again. None of us has had much sleep so early night tonight for everyone.

    It’s been 5 weeks since Pepe arrived, and the progress we’ve made together may be small, but every tiny step matters. With a dog as deeply traumatised as Pepe, nothing can be rushed — it’s all about understanding what he can cope with and giving him the space he needs.
    One thing that truly seems to comfort him is working together on the lead. When we’re moving with purpose, his focus settles and he becomes much calmer. So I’ve brought back the most basic obedience exercises from years ago, and to my surprise… he actually enjoys it.
    He’s no longer constantly in flight-or-fight mode. Bit by bit, he is learning how to relax. He chooses to spend less time in his crate now. the door is always open for him if he needs it. (more…)
