  • Calling Podenco People in the Dover (UK) area

    New pod in Dover 400 7 2021
    From Polly Mathewson.

    Dear Podenco People!

Are there any pod families in the Dover area of Kent, UK?

Writing on behalf of this sweet newly adopted handsome fellow and his loving Mum who has recently moved to Dover and who would be glad to meet some fellow pod families to share tips and trips…maybe a regular joint walk. This little hound is very easy at home, good with people and other dogs and even on public transport, but has a high prey drive, so it would help his Mum to gain confidence to get out and about more if they had some partners in crime! And it would be more fun.

    The more pods the merrier!

There are quite a lot of us poddie people up here on the north Kent coast, but are there any down south? Or are you in Dover and part of a really friendly dog (not specifically pod) meet up group? Or on your own with a dog and would love a walking mate.

  • Update on Podencos Camilo & Eloy in their forever home in Germany

    Camilo and Eloy 400 7 2021
    From Polly Mathewson.

Dear Friends of our CAMILO & ELOY podenco brothers, now proudly going by their new adoptive names MIGUEL & MIGAS, it is incredible to see the strides the boys are taking now on only DAY 3 of their new lives in Germany with their loving forever Mums Regina and Monika and their sweet pod siblings Whoopie and Muffin.

The video of the boys tentatively creeping out of the cosy igloo to explore is from this SUNDAY NIGHT, just hours after they arrived from their long journey from southern Spain to northern Germany! Amazing. And their other video eating side by side. How proud we are of our shy little loves and how grateful we are to their new family, the KeksBande (The Biscuit Gang) for helping Migas-Eloy and Miguelito-Cami to feel this secure and so comfy already.

  • Podencos Camilo and Eloy – en route for their forever home.

    Camilo and Eloy 400 7 2021
From Polly Mathewson, who has been helping these 2 brothers for many years.

‘CAMILO & ELOY are heading home today (23/7/2021) and feel so HAPPY! You can turn up the volume to hear them joyfully whistling!

They also have a very long list of friends who they want to thank.

After the tragedy of spending all of their eight years of life so far “In Kennels & In-Visible” our shy beautiful Spaniards, podenco brothers, ELOY & CAMILO, set off today Friday 23 July to arrive on Saturday 24 July with their wonderful forever family in Germany, Mums Regina Schnelle & Monika Habner and poddie siblings Whoopie and Muffin. This is a dream come true for our two.

The boys have endured so many frightened, lonely and sad years, but this last year has been an increasingly good one since we could move them to Costapet kennels near Malaga for rehabilitation. It’s been a year in which they have found increasing confidence and more friends, canine and human, than they could have imagined. Their extended family has become enormous!
Our boys are grateful beyond words or woofs, for all the love they have received from everyone – as am I – one of their 3 temporary Mums and writing this on their behalf.

  • Please sign and share widely – help the podencos of Gran Canaria

Mogan podencos PACMA pic 7 2021

This appeal is from the Association which worked to free the Podencos of Mogan and is caring for them ready for rehoming.

‘Every year in the field many see our grounds and neighborhoods invaded by hunters who respect nothing. We get pellets in the yard, dogs get in the house, hens kill us, break us crops, fences, pipes… threatening us. We fear for our lives, our animals and goods.

They take advantage of places with few neighbors and little surveillance to commit their atrocities. Officers usually arrive late if they arrive and we are unprotected by lack of surveillance and impunity for hunters.

They also don’t respect the environment, they hunt in special protection areas where hunting is prohibited, they shoot protected birds, cats and whatever is terrified.’

We want the law to be enforced. Respect for the safety zones, not allowed to hunt alongside houses, crops, domestic animals, roads, recreational areas and protected spaces. Increase the available troopers and take measures to ensure compliance with existing regulations.

  • Update from PACMA on the Podencos of Mogan, Gran Canaria

    Mogan podencos PACMA pic 400 7 2021
    From PACMA

‘Good news. The case of the Podencos de Mogán, which you will surely remember, is finally advancing in the courts. Statements have been taken and, in general, the instruction of the procedure seems to be on the right track. We will fight to the end to obtain the maximum sentence for the people responsible for the terrible state in which these dogs were.

After years of intense struggle by PACMA together with protectors from the area, in April 2020, at last, those known as “the 90 podencos de Mogán”, who lived crowded, famished and among their own excrement in this municipality of Gran Canaria, they were seized and rescued from a life of exploitation and mistreatment. A few months ago we were able to see how they recover, free and happy, in foster homes.

Already in 2013 we began to denounce the horrible situation of mistreatment and overcrowding experienced by the podencos used for illegal breeding and hunting in the Canary Islands. In Mogán, the PACMA team witnessed and documented the deplorable confinement of almost a hundred hounds, locked in cages, severely malnourished, without any hygienic measures, living with the corpses of their companions and feeding on their own faeces. After years of fighting and denunciations, last year their luck finally changed.

At PACMA we work every day to save animals like them from exploitation, abandonment and abuse, to toughen penalties and to prohibit hunting.

Hopefully there will be more good news about this case soon. And, as always, for them, the fight continues!’

  • Bev Farmer – victim of a poisonous Spanish centipede

    Centipede 400
    News from Bev.

‘A month ago I posted that I had been bitten by Scolopendra, a giant centipede here in Spain, whilst asleep in bed. At the the time I was not too concerned as few years ago I was bitten by one and it made me feel un well for a couple of days but nothing major.

This time is was very different and it made me very ill, causing problems with weakness in my muscles, my kidneys and affecting my nervous system. At the point where it bit me the skin became necrotic and I was covered in a rash and was quite worried when the medics started taking about meningitis.

I am over the worse of it and they think this reaction was much stronger because I had been bitten in the past. However it has left me having to pace myself and taking a break from Face book/social media. Just to say all the dogs are fine and I will post updates for everyone.
