  • Protectora Scooby – donations needed for big vet fees and more please

    Scooby needs some help

In Scooby we have never hesitate to help all the animals we could, our friends from Andalucia, Extremadura, Murcia, Castile la Mancha desperately asked us for help for the galgos and podencos, hunting dogs and some mestiz os, all this knowing that from our land we were getting enormous amounts of animals but we could not turn our back on them and now we find that we have about 500 between galgos and podencos, 500 animals that need to eat, need to be cleaned and need treatments see Terinaries, almost 80% of the clinic and hospital work they are for our own animals, castrate them, vaccinate them, various operations, blood tests.

We have had to hire more staff and now we need you, we need to pay the workers, our thought providers, vaccines, bisturics, etc.

We need people who want to organize events to raise funds. At Scooby we have always hesitated to ask for little and now we need it. If you can help us, they will thank you. Plus donations to Scooby are indestructible.

If you want to help us continue saving and changing lives, you can do so in the following ways:

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – no end to the abandonment

    2 galgos from hunter 400 1 29 11 2021
Sandy Galgoslover of Galgos Rescue Almeria writes.

‘Every year, thousands of animals worldwide are dumped and left to their own devices. Unfortunately, only a small part of these animals find happiness and a new future.

That’s why support is so important for those who desperately need help to get a different and better life.

2021 was a year of ups and downs, with laughter and tears, with many emotions and also with disappointments. A year with not only happy stories, but also sad stories of dogs that haven’t been able to enjoy their new life for long and have passed away much too young. Gitano, Felix, Rumba you’re gone but not forgotten. Also a year of deception, GRA was scammed by a company that sells storage containers. It hurts to lose money meant to improve the welfare of the animals.

Thanks to help and support we managed to make 143 dogs and owners happy.

  • Tanamera Rescue – urgent help needed for rescued Podenca

From Jacky Hazelger of Tanamera Rescue.

‘appeal for ZENA – see video

ZENA will need a surgery next week. Abandoned and left on her own with a broken leg. End of the hunting season, and obviously vet costs would be high.

So here we are, we have taken responsability for another dog that was abandoned, and this will cost a 1000 euros to begin with (assuming she has no illnesses, like leish). On top of all other dogs we already care for.

Surgery 600, xrays, sterilisation, chip, vaccines, worming, seresto and bloodtests. Not even including food costs or petrol.

Luckily Jenny Screen will foster her for us so we don’t have to to pay residencia costs.

Can you help us pay the bills for Zena?

  • Jaen – a Tribute to the Podenco

    Jaen wall art 1 400 3 2022
From Pedro Espino, Huella de Jaén – Homage to the Podenco

With this ART, with this BEAUTY, with this STUNNING IMAGE we want to make a small and humble tribute to the most mistreated race in Jaén: THE ANDALUZ PODENCO; although it is not finished, we could not wait for the illusion that makes us show how to look A in our Shelter.

The artist is Miguel Lara Fernandez who unites his Art and Heart for animals. It’s the perfect conjunction, and so it reflects.

  • Podenco Blanca making new friends at Podenco Friends

Blanca is an older podenca with health problems in the loving care of Bev Farmer. Here’s a heartwarming video of her, Bev updates her story.

    ‘New friends for Blanca…

Losing Pinto was such a shock and devastating for Blanca and myself and I wondered how she would cope losing him, they had been together for 9 years .. A life time of neglect and abuse for both of them, they found comfort in the company of one another.
Blanca has surprised me, she has very much come out of her shell. I think she lived in Pintos shadow and felt secure doing so, for she was a very nervous dog when she first arrived at the finca.

Like people, dogs also find strength to carry on, especially the Podencos that suffer so much and Blanca found that inner strength and very much embracing life .. Now she runs up to me tail wagging insisting I give her treats, picking up toys and throwing them around, she has found friendship with Timo and Astro.

From that shy girl that always was a couple of feet behind Pinto I now see a very different dog much more confident .. Maybe all those years of her watching Pinto registered with her. Although she was happy for him to take the lead she knew she was safe here and took a leap of faith to be a little more braver here at the finca.

  • Podencos Rosely and Bo – portrait by Andy Liddell

Rosie Bo portrait framed 1 450
Last month a couple of friends organised a fundraiser for Ann Marie Payne. The prize was a portrait by Glasgow artist Andy Liddell. I sent him a couple of photos of Rosely and Bo and this is the absolutely fabulous portrait he created. It captures completely the expressions on their faces, and especially the exact colour of blind podenco Bo’s eyes.

If you are interested in a portrait by Andy, contact him direct.

  • PACMA on the draft change to the Penal Code – no good for hunting dogs

    PACMA 26 2 2022 400
‘As you may know, in recent months there has been a considerable stir around possible changes in the Penal Code that would affect the penalties for animal abuse.

The reforms that are projected in its draft are very far from meeting the expectations of animal activists; not even with those of current social feeling. The abusers will continue without stepping on jail.

Killing and mistreating animals will remain a game.

The maximum sentence for assault on an animal resulting in death is 24 months; just the minimum to avoid going to prison. The potential prison saturation could lead the judges to decide to change the sentence for a fine, whose bureaucratic process has also been streamlined. Many may become insolvent.
