  • Galgos Rescu Almeria – update on abused Podenca Tracy

    Last week’s news from Galgos Rescue Almeria about the abused podenca now safely in their care.

    ‘We had an appointment with Tracy at the traumatologist, originally just to take X-rays, but given the severity of the fracture, it was necessary to do the surgery immediately. She then went to our fosterers until her next check up.

    Second visit to the vet with Tracy. Her wound had to be checked and cleaned, also her bandage was renewed. Everything looked very well. Yet no running/ playing for this young lady.

  • Podenco Ibicenco Timo – looking for a special forever home

    ‘Timo … I need your help to find him his forever sofa

    He has been with us for a long time ..years, he was adopted twice once to the UK (it didnt work out for him ). Then later to Spain but a change of circumstances with his family meant he came back ..

    To be honest I kind of lost my confidence about rehoming him I was worried it wouldnt work out for him and whilst at the finca he had a great life, plenty of dogs for him to play with lots of space to run around .. But when I had my accident last summer which I didnt make a big fuss about, but I was struggling and needed crutches to walk for some time. When I moved from the finca I wasnt able to walk him, so I had to put him into a residence where he has been there for some months.

  • Podenca Dana with Galgos 112 – recuperating from her operation

    Galgos 112 also sometimes get a podenco needing help. Introducing Dana.

    ‘Dana has already been operated at @canisgirona, doctor Font tells us that everything has gone well and she will finally be able to walk without pain. Recall Dana was thrown like a bum for this knee injury. It was hard to find a home (it’s possible…) but thanks to a generous family from Girona (thanks) she has a foster home where she will be cared for and spoiled until her final family arrives.

    We have to ask for help, without your contributions it is impossible to afford these operations that are not cheap. If you can help we would appreciate it.’

  • Paul O’Grady – a sad loss to the UK animal world

    Paul O’Grady died peacefully on 29th March 2023. He was a wonderful ambassador for Battersea Cats & Dogs Home, finding forever homes for many of the shelter’s residents through his TV Programme ‘For The Love of Dogs’. RIP lovely man, you will be sorely missed by so many.

    When is abandoning your pet justified?

    The answer is very simple: NEVER. A family member should never be dumped for no reasons and leaving them in a shelter is also ABANDONMENT.

    If you have an illness, you or someone close to you take them to a residence for temporary care.

    If the illness is serious and it’s going to prevent you from living with a pet, find a home from someone close to you so the separation is as less traumatic as possible.

    If you get pregnant, you do not have to leave your cat no matter how much doctors say there are ways to prevent toxoplasmosis, demand your doctor first to do an analysis for if you have antibodies, which is most likely and otherwise, to give you some tips for living with your cats, like getting another member of your family to clean the tray.

    Little podenco Picolina has a similar problem.

    Shy and really sweet. This is little Picolino, a little still baby who has arrived at our center. She has an injury on his paw somewhat complicated and it is that he doesn’t have a fracture as such, but the femur completely dislocated and therefore the entire knee joint damaged.

    Her injury is really complicated and our vets have thought the worst and that she even needs to be amputated, but the truth is that she looks like she has a chance with a special surgery and a fully customized plaque. And even though we’re not on a budget yet, a custom plaque adds a lot to the bill…..

    Our goal is to keep saving lives, but the hunters don’t keep galgos and more galgos coming in, and cases of traumatology constantly…

    Podencos Ibicencos, the poor cousin of the galgos!

    Andalucia is an area full of them because of their features they have spread all over the territory. Maybe that’s why we don’t know how to appreciate what we have.

    They are:

    Faithful (especially loving and empathetic) energetic lovely (great with people and other dogs) willing loyal smart disease resistant and with few congenital diseases great at Agility love toys
    ….
    But if there’s a race, forgotten and punished, it’s them.

    These are some of ours, they are female and male over 2 years old, no use for hunting.

    But they make wonderful pets.

  • Podenca kicked and abused and bleeding – safe with Galgos Rescue Almeria

    Last Wednesday evening, a Podenco was brought to the vet in extremely worrying condition. At first it was thought she was the victim of a collision. After further examination, her injuries appear to have been caused rather by severe abuse, kicked and beaten before she was hit.

    Her condition was critical, she lost a lot of blood, not only at the fracture of her hind leg. Her body also showed numerous minor and major injuries. In A&E, blood came out of her nose and mouth, it was anxious to see how it was going to evolve.

    Although she hasn’t microchip, (what a surprise!) the important thing is that she’s safe and will get the necessary care and treatment to recover. We have given this beautiful girl the name Tracy.

    Thursday morning we went to visit her, her condition has now stabilised. Eating is also going much better and she is trying to take some steps. According to the vet, she is ready to come to our shelter where she can recover from her nasty adventure.

    This week she will go to the traumatologist for X-rays of the fracture. When she is sufficiently strengthened, the surgery on her hind leg can be done.

  • 4 Podencos dumped in a perrera – the ‘detritus of Spanish hunting’

    In Spain you realize that no matter the time, no matter the “service” you have done, no matter that despite having delivered your whole life to the hunter, he doesn’t care what happens to you because of course, the new legal abandonment modality does not protect you, so here comes the perrera.

    These are 4 beautiful podencas are 8 and 12 years old, their owner has given them to the facility because they are no longer going to hunt, so at their ages they are already well there and continue life….. but the 4 of them stands behind those bars….

    Beacuse they are older, is it going to make it very difficult for them to be adopted? This is the big question that we are asking ourselves, with great pity and powerlessness, because cases like this break your heart even more if it fits.

    We ask for adoption for them, we ask that they do not become invisible, we ask that their lives begin again from the warmth of a home and the love of a family that will love them for the rest of their lives.
