  • Update on Podenca Summer with Podenco Friends

    Bev Summer 400 17 9 2018
You may remember in December 2016 I published the story of Podenca Summer, who arrived in the UK with a bad leg problem. The UK vet wanted to amputate 2 legs (can you imagine the stupidity of such a suggestion?!!) and Bev and Warren of Podenco Friends took her on and have worked with their Spanish vet team to save the legs and give Summer the chance of living out her natural life. Here’a an update from Bev.

‘An update on Summer … we have tapered her pain meds by 50 % and she is coping well and we will continue to reduce. She is able to run around the paddocks but if she does too much then she holds up the leg. This surgery can take a few months to settle and Summer seems much happier in herself, I believe her being in less pain.

We now can start on aqua therapy for her which will be a big help, her gait is still not 100% but better than before and she may always walk a little wonky. As long as she is happy that is all the matters.

  • Podenco Vincente – rescued from life at a petrol station

    Bev Vincente 400 18 9 2018
The volunteers in Spain who live constantly with the plight of abandoned dogs…especially hunting breeds…do amazing work tirelessly. Here’s the latest arrival with Podenco Friends, working hand in hand with another Spanish rescue association. Bev tells the story.

’18/9/2018. Welcome to Vicente who arrived an hour ago we have to thank Vicente Cervero Lopez and his team of SOS Rescue for rescuing him. Vincente was living at a petrol station and it’s taken many weeks to catch him. They even set up a specialist trap with the automated gate but he just wouldn’t go in. Finally today he was caught and we got the call they are on their way. He is very nervous at the moment so we have left him to settle for the night but for the first time he has a warm bed to sleep in and is not dodging traffic.

SOS Rescue are a Spanish team who go out and help catch abandoned dogs all over Spain and, working with rescues,’ are able to find places for the dogs. Only working together can we help save these Podencos

Gracias SOS Rescue por tu gran trabajo.. juntos PODemos

  • Ann’s Canine Care – shelter needs help to build a quarantine kennel

    Libby pups 2 cave 400
You may remember last year the story of the Podenca mum and 5 pups living in a cave. They were rescued and went to Ann’s Canine Care. I’ve also featured some of Ann’s poems here. Now she desperately needs help herself, which she explains.

‘Last year we were forced out of our premises, conned out of €1,800 and were left with nowhere to go. We did a fund raise and fortunately many people donated and helped us to move to where we are now, and at first it seemed like paradise. We had a wonderful summer and all the dogs were happy. But then came the winter, which was the worst in 10 years for rainfall. The kennels were flooding every day because there was nowhere for the rain to drain away. Every day I had to brush the water into buckets and then carry them outside and empty them on to the street. It was a total nightmare.

  • Slowing down the speed eater!

I’ve just returned early from holiday as I received an emergency call for one of my dogs. My galga Carmela had bumped her head – who knows how, the lovely animal sitter didn’t know – collapsed and had been rushed to the vet. Diagnosis is possibly a stroke. She is doing ok on medication but in the meantime I’m trying to catch up on podenco stories. So for the time being here’s another article I thought you might be interested to read.

  • How to brush your dog’s teeth

I have lived with dogs all my life and can’t remember us ever brushing their teeth. We’ve tended to give them bones and chews to do the job. Having said that, my little podenca Bebe came as a 6 year old with her teeth in a terrible state – from bad nutrition as a puppy according to my vet. But apart from having the 4 lower front teeth removed, the rest haven’t caused problems and she is now 15 years old.

Here’s a slide show of how to clean your dog’s teeth.
