  • PACMA on the draft change to the Penal Code – no good for hunting dogs

    ‘As you may know, in recent months there has been a considerable stir around possible changes in the Penal Code that would affect the penalties for animal abuse.

    The reforms that are projected in its draft are very far from meeting the expectations of animal activists; not even with those of current social feeling. The abusers will continue without stepping on jail.

    Killing and mistreating animals will remain a game.

    The maximum sentence for assault on an animal resulting in death is 24 months; just the minimum to avoid going to prison. The potential prison saturation could lead the judges to decide to change the sentence for a fine, whose bureaucratic process has also been streamlined. Many may become insolvent.

    Many prescription medications have side effects. Many natural remedies can provide a safer alternative. This link takes you to an article discussing the subject. Aalthough it’s American, the weblinks therein are very interesting.

    My galgo Polar had a damaged hind knee and I was able to find a canine physiotherapist who use the same treatment on him as I had after my broken shoulder operation. I also used CBD oil for pain relief for him instead of Metacam.

    A few weeks ago I introduced you to Bo (Bocelli), a blind podenco we recently adopted from life on a chain in Lorca, Spain. Having both had dogs for all our seven decades of life, we have never had a blind dog. So it is a new experience for us. He has now been with us for a couple of months and is settling in very well. He can now find his way out of the kitchen into the garden to the toilet, and back again. Luckily we have a ramp at our back door rather than steps, which is much easier for him. He hasn’t so far ventured into the rest of the bungalow but no doubt he will do it one day, in his own time.

    He shares his home with Rosely, a sighted podenca, and very often shares his bed with her. She wears a bell on her collar so he always knows where she is. He is at the stage of wanting to play with her in the garden, but after 6 years shut in a shed breeding babies, Rosely doesn’t know how to play. Her main interest is her stuffed toys, baby substitutes I suspect.

  • Finding the right home for a rescue dog

    Often the history of a rescue dog is unknown. The dog’s character needs to be assessed by the staff in the kennels or by a fosterer to ensure that the right home is found, both for the dogs but also the right dog for the adoptant.
