    KANJI | VIP
Kanji is a female born in June 2023. She is staying at the Pepito Dog Shelter. Reason for VIP status: severe trauma due to brutal abuse.

Becoming a VIP sponsor is incredibly kind

    Update on Kanji.

Update, August 26, 2026: Unfortunately, there is some less-than-ideal news regarding sweet Kanji. That said… While the news isn’t exactly positive, it does demonstrate that shelter volunteers truly consider a dog’s specific needs and always prioritize the well-being of the animals—in this case, Kanji. It has been decided that Kanji will no longer be offered for adoption in the Netherlands.

Kanji is a dog with significant trauma and a painful past; she arrived at the shelter having suffered severe abuse and having barely survived. Initially, this background made her seem like a shy but grateful girl. However, the longer she has stayed at the shelter, the more her fear of new things—and people in particular—has resurfaced. The volunteers cannot pinpoint exactly what is triggering her trauma again; it is possible that because she now feels safe in the shelter, her trauma makes her afraid of the unknown. (more…)

Animal abuse in the Canary Islands: man arrested after being filmed beating a 9-month-old female dog.

The San Bartolomé Local Police secured the animal before the Civil Guard’s SEPRONA unit intervened.

The incident was recorded by two witnesses on Saturday, August 22, at a property in the municipality. The footage shows the man throwing the animal into the back of a pickup truck, tethering it with a short chain, and striking it several times, including on the head.

After learning of the recordings, the Lanzarote Association for the Defense and Against Animal Abuse (Ademal Lanzarote) reported the matter to the authorities and requested the seizure of the animal.

Lio is estimated to be around two years old and will remain small in size. He is a Podenco Andaluz, a special and beautiful breed.
A special thank-you to Helping Animals Almanzora for helping cover Lio’s medical expenses. Thanks to your support, he is getting the best possible start on his journey towards a beautiful future.
More news about Lio will follow soon!
  • Thank you from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends

May be an image of dog

Thank you to everyone who responded to the post about the Podenco who was thrown away in the rubbish.  Over the years, I have always been very sensitive about the content I choose to post. I never want to share something simply for shock value. But this one resonated with me so strongly.

My very first Podenco, Tilly, was thrown into a dumpster in 2003 with a broken leg and left to die.  (see photo above). At the time, I believed it was a random act of unimaginable cruelty. I had no idea that, a few years later, I would begin to discover the reality of what so many Podencos endure.
That is why I shared yesterday’s story.

Not for the shock factor. Not to upset people. But sometimes we need to show the reality.  I apologise if the post caused distress. That was never my intention. But for whatever reason, the story reached more than 400,000 people. And amongst those people will be many who, until this week, had probably never even heard of a Podenco.  And that matters. • Podenco dumped as trash by a Spanish sub-human galguero

    No photo description available.

From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends

Recently, a Podenco was found dead, discarded in the rubbish, tied inside a black plastic bag.  She had a broken leg.

In 2003, Tilly, the first Podenco I ever adopted, was also thrown away and left to die. She had been dumped in a rubbish container with a broken leg.  But Tilly was stubborn. She was strong-willed. And somehow, despite everything, she found the strength to keep barking until someone heard her.  That someone changed the course of her and my life.

And here we are, 23 years later… and it still hasn’t stopped. (more…)
