  • Azores dog rescue – Podenco Reuben needs a forever home

    This is Reuben. He turned up in the kennel yard late one night, very thin but also very happy to have found me.  He had some issues with smaller dogs initially but he learned quickly to get on with them. (He was definitely a working hunter before)
    Reuben loves people! His tail wags and he smiles.
    After I was rushed to hospital, other rescues stepped in to take responsibility for the vast majority of my rescue dogs.  But Reuben has been in a vet clinic since March, he’s still registered as an ADR dog and the bill now stands at just over 600€.  I only just found out  that he’s still an ADR dog after giving away my last donation last week to another rescuer because I didn’t need it.
    Reuben is available for adoption.  He’s 6 years old and weighs around 18kg, he can’t be with cats and maybe not small dogs but he gets on well with other dogs his size (Willow’s pups used to sleep in his bed) and he’s great with children too.

  • Azores – Podencos left in an open truck in full sun!

    An increasing number of tourists are reaching out, deeply saddened and outraged by the instances of squalor and animal abuse found all over the island of S. Miguel, in the Azores, Portugal – Hello, I have just seen in Vila Franca do Campo very skinny dogs left out in the sun on a pickup truck. The guy doesn’t care about leaving them exposed to the sun. Who can I contact?¨

    Left forgotten in the sun—skeletal, blinded by hunger and thirst—in the back of an open-bed truck. They likely live chained up all year round.
    The extraordinary ancient podengos of S. Miguel, Azores, They could be an icon of these islands. And yet, this is how they ended up. They deserve so much better than this.

  • Dog paw pads injuries and wounds – treatment

    Summer can be a difficult time for dogs as the ground gets hard, there are stubble field full of seeds; even walking along a grassy track a dog runs the risk of getting a seed in its paws.

    Not all problems require treatment by a vet.

    Update on Kanji.

    Update, August 26, 2026: Unfortunately, there is some less-than-ideal news regarding sweet Kanji. That said… While the news isn’t exactly positive, it does demonstrate that shelter volunteers truly consider a dog’s specific needs and always prioritize the well-being of the animals—in this case, Kanji. It has been decided that Kanji will no longer be offered for adoption in the Netherlands.

    Kanji is a dog with significant trauma and a painful past; she arrived at the shelter having suffered severe abuse and having barely survived. Initially, this background made her seem like a shy but grateful girl. However, the longer she has stayed at the shelter, the more her fear of new things—and people in particular—has resurfaced. The volunteers cannot pinpoint exactly what is triggering her trauma again; it is possible that because she now feels safe in the shelter, her trauma makes her afraid of the unknown. (more…)

  • 20 Ibizan Hound Podencos for adoption

    20 large-sized Podencos (Ibizan Hound type) are looking for families.
6 seniors + 9 adults + 4 adolescents + 1 six-month-old female puppy.  There are 4 males and 16 females.  
They all come from the same hunter.

They can be adopted in Germany through our foster carer, Irina Conkel.

  • Lanzarote, Canary Islands – animal abuse of a young podenco

    Animal abuse in the Canary Islands: man arrested after being filmed beating a 9-month-old female dog.

    The San Bartolomé Local Police secured the animal before the Civil Guard’s SEPRONA unit intervened.

    The incident was recorded by two witnesses on Saturday, August 22, at a property in the municipality. The footage shows the man throwing the animal into the back of a pickup truck, tethering it with a short chain, and striking it several times, including on the head.

    After learning of the recordings, the Lanzarote Association for the Defense and Against Animal Abuse (Ademal Lanzarote) reported the matter to the authorities and requested the seizure of the animal.
