So, Mallorca. Destination of the hen and stag parties, along with Ibiza! None of these young chavs have any idea of what life is like on the island for the animals – how many dogs and cats are abandoned to fend for themselves. Have a look at the reality – SOS Animal Mallorca. Beautiful dogs, life stretches out for them in the refuge. No podencos, but I just felt I had to publicise yet again that life on the Spanish islands is hard.

Little Pod Association – working in Murcia for the podencos
Some years ago I received a photo of a little podenca puppy held by the scruff of the neck, feet off the ground, in a perrera for killing! I circulated the photo and details to contacts and ‘angela’ as she became known, was rescued and went into foster with Angela Stacey. Sadly Angela pod developed the killer disease parvo virus and died but she touched the hearts of so many people that Angela and her daughter Marie formed Little Pod Association.
They have been doing amazing work rescuing and fostering and organising adoptions for dozens of podencos especially in the Murcia area. On this page you can see some of the fabulous podencos in their care, waiting for forever homes. Please contact them as they rely on donations to carry on their work. And please consider LPA if you have room for a podenco in your heart and home.

SARA Lanzarote – saving the podencos in the Canary Islands
To animals, every day is the same, there are no fete days, bank holidays, Easter, Christmas. Their main concern is a warm bed, food and fresh water, and caring hands. Many people will have whizzed off to the Canary Islands for Christmas in the sun – spare a thought for all the volunteers working to look after all the abandoned and rescued dogs – specially the podencos – most of whom will spend their lives in a refuge unless they are adopted abroad.
Sara Protectora on Lanzarote has over 150 dogs and 70 cats. Read more about their work here – click on the Union Jack for the english pages. More on their work here and a photo album

Rioja wines – take a tour around Rioja
These are some of the podencos in Animales Rioja – (a few are already homed/adopted including my little podenca Bebe). This is a major wine producing area, so why are there so many podencos in the refuge, plus other dogs, waiting for forever homes?
And here are more in the Protectora des Animales de La Rioja including this Portuguese Podengo. And there are Setters and Pointers and Staffies as well as many xbreeds.

Two podencos at risk – Valencia and Hellin perrera
Two more podencos at risk. This sweet little podenco is Tita, she’s about 2 years old and she’s a lovely girl but she’s in Hellin kill station beryl. Contact teresawatkin@msn.com or Christine Mort (don’t have her details.
And this poor Podenco Ibicenco is abandoned and about to give birth in La Calle, Valencia. She is very fearful and doesn’t stay in one place, she’s moving around villages. She’s only about 2 years old. It’s very cold at night and if she isn’t caught soon, her puppies will probably not survive. The appeal is on facebook so let’s hope someone in the area can catch her soon. Another example of the hard life the podencos have.

Injured Valencia podenca and puppies – safe now with Podenco Friends
Saved just in time. Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends tells the story of this mamma podenca and her puppies, living rough with freezing temperatures at night. She has been named Alexa.
‘The team in Valencia have caught her and are on their way down to Murcia, the bad news is she has been badly injured. Deep lacerations down her side and one of her breasts ripped open, they think she has been attacked by a wild boar. We have had to make the decision to take the mum now she needs urgent medical care and people are still in the area looking for the pups. Our vets are on standby ready to operate on her.

Podenco Homer hoping someone will want him
Homer is 6 years old and he has spent his whole life on a chain by his hunter owner. As if that wasn’t enough the black hearted fiend beat Homer badly every day, can’t bare to think how bad that was. Homer is now in a residencia with the other dogs. He’s been there nearly a month, the kind angel who has been paying the kennel fees cannot afford to do it continually and he needs a foster home or a forever home urgently now.
Homer is a beautiful soul but when humans approach him he shakes violently with fear from the abuse the hunter gave him. This is so sad, he is going to need patience and an overdose of TLC to get him through what’s happened to him. It will take time but at the end you are going to have one beautiful boy who trusts you totally. If you think this could be you then please contact Teresa Watkin email or via her facebook page.
Come on, folks, let’s get this boy a loving home soon.
