For those of you who haven’t seen these before, two videos of ‘kennels’ where podencos are kept on Gran Canaria. Estimates are 85,000 podencos on these islands, most living in horrendous conditions on the breadline, disposed of in horrendous ways at the end of hunting in December each year.

Galgos 112 – saving lives in Spain
I’ve Internet translated the two very sad stories of Monk and Orion, now safe in the care of Galgos 112. You can see more photos of them on Galgos 112 website. Donate to their expensive veterinary treatment here.
Monk
Is a small hound, picked up at the beginning of February in Marchena (Seville) in very poor condition and with a fracture in his rear leg.
Since he had lost a lot of blood and was malnourished and dehydrated, that same day he entered the Lepanto vet Hospital emergency room, but because of the delicate state of health it wasn’t possible operate it until he was stronger.

Please send email before 12th March 2014 –
Please read this appeal which I’ve posted on Galgo News because at the moment it is only about galgos. BUT IT NEEDS TO BE ABOUT PODENCOS TOO! They need you to send emails urgently on their behalf – because you are their voice.

Cheap Accommodation on Gran Canaria now available
In February 2014, as a result of a complaint made to Seprona (Society for Protection of Nature in the Civil Guard), a ‘person of Spanish Nationality’ was charged with the crime of abuse and neglect of animals in the village of Vallebron, in the municipality of La Oliva. On his farm were six Podenco Canarios, two already dead, the others were starving. The place also did not meet adequate requirements for the protection of animals.
This is the harsh reality of life for the tens of thousands of podencos living on the Canary Islands. It’s what the tourists don’t see. Please share the story and tell them!

‘It’s a 50km walk through Wallonia in Belgium and it’s spread out over two days, the 5th and 6th of April. You can read why I’m doing it on this link. Let’s hope the weather is kind to me!’
The dogs on Lucy’s page are all for adoption – including gorgeous pointer x Leila. contact Pepis about them.

Podenco Vigo in Portugal – waiting for forever
This beautiful podenco is Vigo and he lives in Portugal. He was rescued from a bad shelter where there were a lot of sick dogs. Vigo had it all…. Leishmaniose, heartworm, skin problems etc. A foster home was found for him and the money raised to pay for all the veterinary treatment he needed. He’s been there since September. He has recovered fully from all his ailments and is ready for adoption. The vet thinks he is about 7 years old.
If you can offer Vigo the forever home he deserves, please contact Antoinette.

Podencos and cats – compatible?
This beautiful photo is of Podenca Canario Fada from Tenerife and in foster with Mieke Coryn in Belgium. Just proving that some podencos can live with cats.
She’s underweight at the moment, Mieke says ‘she was found on the streets with a wounded leg and those people took care of her for 2 weeks. But she was tied with a chain on their balcony because they weren’t allowed animals. After that the organisation took over and she was spayed and stayed at the pension for a few weeks until her flight here.’
Fada will soon gain weight now she is in foster receiving regular meals and love.
If anyone is interested in applying to adopt Fada and offer her a forever home, there is a form to complete on the website Sighthounds2Save – it’s in Flemish/Dutch but your computer may have the option to translate into English – mine does.
