The reality of life for podencos – these two Mamas and their babies are in Almeria ‘high kill’ perrera – that means they will be some of the first to be killed as the pound is full! Huma has two boy pups, both old enough to eat on their own, and Kaleshi has 3 female and 3 male puppies, all still suckling – will she be fed enough to produce milk for them – just for them to be killed shortly?!
In perreras, podencos are killed in their dozens every week – those lucky enough to be rescued from abandonment on the streets languish for months, sometimes years, in refuges waiting to be adopted, especially on the Canary Islands.
Do you remember the Valencia podencos – we appealed to save some which then went into kennels? There are still two in the kennels … waiting. Their kennel fees need paying. I’ve asked for info as to how we can help them.
In so far as the Mammas and pups are concerned, volunteers are trying to find foster homes for them…but everyone is full…
We need to work on publicising the amazing podencos, what wonderful fun pets they make. With training, they could be agility dogs, Canicross dogs, or simply ‘curl up on the sofa with you’ dogs.
Too many podencos spend their lives in refuges because people take the galgos first. Help bring about change – Help the Podencos.
