  • Podenca Freya – her pups visit the vet – with Galgo’s Rescue Almeria

    GRA Freya baby 400 1 4 2021
From Sandy Galgoslover at Galgo’s Rescue Almeria.

‘Today it was once again the turn of the youngest of GRA to go on a vet visit. Freya’s babies got another check-up and their latest vaccinations. Since the little ones were born on February 3 and are not yet 12 weeks old, it was still too early for their rabies vaccination. We have made a new appointment for next week. In the meantime everyone got his / her name.’

Galgo’s Rescue Almeria desperately needs funds to pay for all the vaccinations and pet passports for these little babies. Please donate and help.

  • Podenco Paolo – from Gran Canaria to his forever home

    Bev Paolo 1 300 18 4 2021
A delightful happy ever after story from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.

‘Paolo….. a Podenco Canario and his best friend

On the Island of Gran Canaria Paolo´s mother Uma, was chained to the wall in a box, giving birth to her puppies on a concrete floor. They were crying out to her, newly born she was unable to reach them. Other dogs that were not restrained were trying to take the pups and sadly one of the siblings was killed. Seprona were on site, after a report of the terrible conditions the 16 podencos were held in. Thankfully they agreed to remove them and allowed for the mum & pups to go directly to a veterinary clinic.
They went to a foster home on the island were Uma was able to care for her pups in comfortable surroundings. Paolo and the three other pups came to us 3 months later and Jodie adopted him and once old enough he travelled to the UK.

She has always sent me lots of photos videos and updates of him and he grew into a wonderful dog then two years later she had her baby daughter. From the day she was born Paolo has been her constant companion, so gentle and caring with her. She will grow up with him and know she has a faithful and loyal friend always by her side, sharing walks on the beach and holidays.
Thank you Jodie for sharing these special moment with your family.’

  • Podenca Almond in Toledo – starving and saved just in time

    Toledo pod 1 400 4 2021
    Almond for adoption!

We had us notice of an abandoned puppy, but upon arrival at the scene we couldn’t believe what we saw. She could barely get up, we don’t know how many days she hadn’t eaten or had a drink. We went right to the vet, and evidently, she stayed in. She was there for a week and now she’s already with us.

She is good, very good and although she has severe malnutrition, she eats very well and will recover in no time. She has a sad look, so much must have happened in her life. She has fears but nothing she won’t recover with patience and lots of love, and she won’t miss it at her foster home.

If you’re interested in giving Almond all the love she’s never had write to some of the following phones:

  • Life of abuse on the end of a chain in Spain?

I’m always pleased to hear from readers of my blogs, whether they are regulars or ‘one-offs’. I recently received this one, which is not from someone who has written before. Not sure where they got the first paragraph from because it isn’t one I’ve written, though I agree with its sentiment. We all know the last 2 sentences in the second paragraph are rubbish! Those hunters who do treat their dogs with respect are a very small minority and still get rid of them when they are no longer of use.

I wonder if you agree with their comments.

    ‘Alexander Schaub Clerigué
    To:
    banddbrennan@yahoo.co.uk

“If a podenco itself could choose between a life in Spain on a short chain, vegetative in the burning sun, often without food or water, often abused , only being released for hunting for between 12 to 25 days or a life in a forever adopted home with love, care and attention every day food, long walks and an own basket where do you think a podenco would choose?!”

This is a very unfortunate and tendentious generalisation, many spaniards adopt podencos and give them a happy life within the family environment (that’s the case of my family and many others). Additionally, most of the Spanish hunters I have met treated their podencos with respect. You should reconsider the accuracy of that paragraph.

  • Tail Torrox Dog Rescue – young podencos now in their care

    A recent rescue.

‘Two young podenco types. Thank you to their finder, Jill, for feeding them and keeping them safely enclosed in a fenced area. Also thank you to SOS Rescue who kindly assisted to catch them using a large trap. It is a pleasure to work with you knowing the dogs will be safely caught with minimum stress and secured properly for transport.

Sadly we are being asked to help more and more feral dogs. Dogs that have been left abandoned in the streets and campo…They arrive full of parasites and often with preventable diseases. Sometimes they are second generations as breeding is not control.
These dogs do not lead a ‘happy and free life’ as some people would like to believe. Life is a struggle for survival and sooner or later they are taken by disease or die on the roads.

Rehabilitation of these dogs takes time, knowledge and of course money.

    To donate,

  • Galgo’s Rescue Almeria – 2 podencos saved at Easter 2021

    GRA Bimba 400 1 4 2021
From Sandy at Galgo’s Rescue Almeria

‘2 podencos safe now with GRA…rescued at Easter.

Even on Easter no rest for GRA. We received an emergency call if we could take in a little podenca. Spanish people saw her walking on the highway and did not hesitate to get her out of this extremely danger situation. Many thanks Celia and Matias to save her.

Before “ Bimba “ (that’s the name she got) arrived at our shelter she had already received a bath and treatment for fleas/ticks /worms. The vet has now given her a full checkup, vaccinations, chip/passport and bloodtest. Bimba tested negative for all Mediterranean diseases.

Then a day later we received an emergency call that someone was on our way with a podenco. He walked right next to the motorway and the woman managed to put him in her car. He was easily caught, hurt, full of ticks and exhausted as if asking for help.
We gave him the name Multatuli, which means: “ I have suffered much “.
