  • Asociacion Huellas Gaditanas – a deserving podenco needing a forever family

    Huellas pod 400 14 5 2021
So sad that when a hunting dog gets older, they are abandoned to their fate. So cruel after they have been loyal servants.

Introducing POCHITO – He was literally letting himself DIE on the edge of a road. Abandoned, never had a show of affection, waste of people who only see it as a hunting object, nothing else. Fortunately, an angel took him off the road and without showing any kind of rejection he let himself be rescued. Now he recovers in a foster home, from his physical and psychic aftermath.

He is about 9 years old, Podenco Maneto, small size and he is regaining his desire to live, he just wants to lay down to the sunny and needs a lot of love because he is quite afraid and suspicious. He is sociable, calm, noble, he askes only for a comfy bed, food and lots of love.

    He needs a definitive family.

He’s located in San Roque (Cadiz) but can be shipped.

  • Update on the 3 podencos with Akira Animal Sanctuary.

This is was the skinniest of the three poor dogs as you can see from the photos he is malnourished however we are working hard to remedy this and he is already much more comfortable.

Chance has had his blood tests back and it relieved he has leishmaniasis so we are treating and getting this condition under control. Once under control it doesnt hinder daily life and controlled can be maintained with an inexpensive tablet. He is a sweet boy and will make a lovely addition.

Now we have the gorgeous Chase. If you look closely you can see this handsome boy had a heart-shaped nose. They are all very sweet natured dogs and it’s appalling that they arrived so poorly. We have just had confirmation that he has heartworm, ehrlicia and Leishmania. We will of course be giving him treatment but this is a lot for his body to go through and much can be prevented easily.

Coco. Isn’t he just a sweetheart? He has had his tests and he has come back positive for heartworm which of course he will be treated for. So glad that these 3 are in a safe place with us to start down the road to recovery now we know what each of their issues are.

We will continue to publish their progress and if you wish to register your interest in adoption when they are ready then you can drop an email to akirashelter@aol.com.

  • Walking dogs off lead

Do not allow dogs off leads 400

OH and Bracken were lucky this morning. They had just got back to the car after a lovely walk along the river bank when a BMW 4×4 pulled up with 3 boisterous dogs inside. Luckily the owner didn’t let them out until OH had put Bracken in the car, whereupon she opened the tailgate and the 3 dogs flew out leaping around. Bracken isn’t very friendly towards other dogs now, so it could have been an unpleasant situation! Having said that, their owner should train them to wait in the car till she gives permission to leave, it’s what we do with our dogs.

  • Akira Animal Sanctuary – saving the podencos of Benissa, Spain

Star is a gorgeous young podenca, currently with Akira Animal Sanctuary and hoping for a forever home soon. Contact Akira if you are interested in her. Read the info on this weblink.

At the end of April 3 podencos were surrendered to the Shelter.

These 3 doggies were surrendered to Akira. They are definitely in the best place now as when they arrived they were covered in fleas and ticks but they have been treated so should start to feel better soon. They have been given good food and shown love and tenderness.

We will be working to feed them up and make them healthy as you can see they are underweight as well. They are very sweet natured dogs despite their condition. We will keep you updated on their journey and hopefully they will soon be ready to search for their very own forever home.

We have called them Coco, Chance and Chase.

  • Ibizan Hound Rescue – 10 hounds in a motor home!

    Ibizan Hound Rescue motor home 400 30 3 2021
This is a lovely story of rescue and the lengths people will go to help hounds. From Ibizan Hound Rescue.

    ‘ONE YEAR ON’

The lockdown litter, Lady and Lola and pups

Many people who follow IHR on facebook will remember the wonderful story of two dogs who found their way into the motor home of British couple Sarah and Darren who were travelling around Spain last year (2020) only to be stranded due to the first lockdown.
Sarah and Darren named the two female Podencos Lady and Lola and soon discovered that Lady was pregnant.

In April 2020 Lady gave birth to 8 healthy pups and all 10 dogs were cared for by Sarah and Darren in their motor home until we could help and in June they came to Ibizan Hound Rescue. Their story even appeared in local news.

All 8 pups (4 sets of twins) were snapped up straight away and went to their wonderful forever homes a short while after.
Super mum Lady and Lola ( believed to be Lady’s daughter from another litter) took a little while longer to find their forever homes but at long last we are so happy to report fantastic happy ever afters.

  • Leishmania – its causes and treatment

Click on this weblink for an article by a vet on the subject of Leishmania, its causes and treatment. Whilst the article is in the GIN newsletter and refers to galgos, it also applies to podencos. It’s a very controllable disease and a podenco can live a normal life for its lifetime on regular testing and treatment. Don’t let a dog with leishmania put you off adopting it! It’s not their fault the hunters don’t take steps to protect them with a simple Scalibor collar!
