• Blind Podenco Bocelli finds his feet at the dog park

    Bo Sutterton 2 400
    It’s now 10 months since we adopted blind Podenco Bocelli from Blind Dogs UK, and rescued by volunteers working in Spain with Ibizan Hound Rescue. The vet thinks his blindness was caused by an untreated eye infection when he was tethered and starved on the end of a chain in the Lorca region of southern Spain. He can see shadows, but his sense of direction is governed by his acute hearing and amazing nose!

    Trained to walk up a ramp into the back of our car, each Sunday morning we take him and his housemate Rosely to a local private dog park where Bo enjoys wandering freely and confidently, in his own little world. Once a month he goes to the local Dog Cafe where he finds his way around the tables and chairs and he’s also been to the coast and paddled in the sea – always on lead there!

    So for anyone who has a dog losing its sight, don’t be concerned, they adapt amazingly well to life. And if you are thinking of adopting a dog, why not one from Blind Dogs UK – they deserve a forever home too.

  • 2 new arrivals at Podenco Friends in Murcia

    Bev Rory 400 10 2022
    From Bev Farmer – as ever, always there for the podencos.

    Rory .. new arrival this week. A big Podenco Ibicenco that is pitifully thin and very frightened. He’s been in a perrera since
    22nd September and the volunteers have managed to get him out for walks and spend some time with him.

    He is about 2 years old and this photo does not reflect what poor condition he is in. Give him a couple of days to get over the transport then take him to our vets for tests health checks etc.

    You see… there are people who claim Podencos don’t get abused … I say – look at this beautiful soul, what did he do so wrong to be treated so badly .. it will take months to get him back to good health.’

    Also new to the shelter this week is Bimba…

  • New arrivals at Galgos Rescue Almeria

    From Sandy Galgoslover

    ‘This week we not only welcomed little Susie but also this beautiful girl Africa joined our podenco pack.
    This wirehaired is not afraid at all and very social with other dogs. She immediately found or rediscovered a soul mate, Norman.

    Both come from Mazarrón perrera and who knows, maybe they recognize each other. By the way, we often wrongly read the name: killing station, not every perrera is a killing station. Life in the perrera is obviously not ideal, but volunteers do their utmost to make it as pleasant as possible for the animals.

    Thanks to the help and support of Friends of Mazarrón Animals these 2 now get a new chance in life, thank you

  • When will they punish the right end of the lead?

    Debra Jefferson poem 400
    Although this poem is about a ‘dangerous’ breed, it could just as easily apply to any podenco in a perrera which has a kill policy, where the podencos are dumped by the hunter!

  • Podenco Friends’ podencos living with cats?

    More from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends on Josephine the cat!

    ‘Lots of people ask if Podencos can live with cats. I never had a cat for obvious reasons and none of my Podencos were cat friendly.. But then came Josephine, I found her, a kitten about 6 months old by the rubbish bins .. It was close to Christmas no local cat rescues had space. I’m thinking this poor kitten is not safe with us but left with no choice introduced her to the 1O podencos one by one.
    I needn’t have worried she soon showed them who is boss and was welcomed into the family.
    I never imagined a cat could live with all our Podencos. Josephine proved me wrong.’

  • Podenca injured and abandoned – safe now in a loving home

    Podenca twisted jaw 1 10 2022
    A heartwarming story about a little podenca who suffered horrendous cruelty in Spain – injured and abandoned!

    ‘Just the story off one little podenco from Spain

    Miss Palma(Duquesa). Palma is a Light, a special soul here on this earth. She touches so many people. Her soul is so beautifull … Im so happy she is in my life.

    She was found wandering around the street. When they rescued her the jaw was totally twisted. She could not open her mouth, eat, drink or bark at all. She was taken to an emergency . The operation was complicated and the following care too. The vet did a good job, thank God.

  • Difference between a Podenco and Galgo?

    Pod and galgo in play 400 10 2022
    What is the difference between a Galgo and a Podenco?
    A Real Life Story written by an unknown Author…

    “Besides the obvious, Humans often ask;
    What is the difference between a Galgo and a Podenco?

    I want to explain it by an example:

    A Trip to the Dog Park

    We Arrive;

    The Galgos are running like crazy.
    The Pods welcome every dog, man, tree, blade of grass with endless, constantly changing, body language and facial expressions.

    The First Five Minutes after Arrival;
    The galgos are running like crazy.
    The Pods dig up seventy small animals, they create mounds of undefinable mud, which sticks to everything it touches.
