Sunday 16 October – demonstrations in Spain and Spanish Islands

A Special home needed for Podenca Bonnie, waiting in the Canary Islands
This beautiful podenca is in the municipal shelter in Albergue, San Bartolome, Las Palmas, Canary Islands. Her main hope of a special forever home is on mainland Europe. Please consider offering her a forever home.‘I know, I’m not like the others, I need to be more careful because I was born with a wrong leg and I need to fix it when I grow up and this is why… that I’m not like the others.
But I have two ears…. two beautiful eyes and most of all a heart… just like the others … who can give you so much love and show you how grateful I would be to come into your life forever. I believe in you, and I wait for you. With love BONNIE.

Update on injured Podenco Wilf
Pleased to report that Wilf, the badly injured podenco left lying at the side of the road and rescued by the PINS organisation has now had his stitches out and is making a good recovery, although still on very limited exercise. And enough money was raised from the Kilt Walk to pay for his operation and for 4 more rescued podencos to have Pet Passports and vet/travel expenses to bring them to the UK for foster and homing. Thank you.

Grand Canaria Podencos adopted
It’s hard for the Podenco rescue associations in the Canary Islands to rehome the rescues on the Islands so generally forever homes are found for them on mainland Europe. Adopta un Amigo de Gran Canaria recently published a list of the adoptions so far this year.Maya and Doriana now Lya, Adopted in Switzerland
Artenara, Adopted in Italy
Shadow, Adopted in Germany
Ivy, Adopted in United Kingdom
Brandon, Adopted in Italy -
Protests on Gran Canaria to support the hunting dogs
FAUDA – Federation of United Associations for the Defence of Animals – on Gran Canaria recently supported the Campaign against hunting dogs being exclused from the Animal Protection Act.
Susana Griso joins the campaign so that hunting dogs are not excluded from the Animal Protection Act. It is unacceptable that dogs who are the most vulnerable are left out of the law that should protect them.

Podenca Rosely enjoying the Canine Coffee Morning
On the first Wednesday morning of each month a local bikers’ cafe hosts a Canine Coffee Morning to which we take our podencos Rosely and blind Bo. Usually it is held in a marquee at the rear of the cafe along the riverside but the October event – for a change – was held in the ‘front of house’ cafe. It’s a smaller area than the marquee so blind Bo was allowed off lead to wander.
For a treat, each dog gets a plastic cup of aerosol cream, and often treats from the owners! So here are a couple of pix of Rosely enjoying her cream and Bo mingling with the other dogs – including an Old English Setter recently adopted from Greece – enjoying treats by the stage.

Podencos – a most loyal breed
Regular readers will know that in December last year I adopted a very timid 8 year old podenca called Rosely. It’s been a long journey introducing her to the outside world away from breeding babies for a Spanish hunter. She follows me everywhere – literally! – but is getting over her separation anxiety, with her housemate blind podenco Bo. She sleeps on her bed at the side of mine every night, nowadays she’s usually there before me! Until last night. My other half was out at an evening meeting and she refused to come to bed until he returned, barking a welcome on his arrival.
So I joked with him that in future he’d better not be too late, because instead of his wife waiting up for him, it will be her dog!!

Podencos and Galgos – house dog – hunting dog – no difference! Sign the petition
A house dog…. A hunting dog. Spot the difference?! ALL dogs need legal protection. The Spanish government wants to exclude hunting dogs from the new animal protection laws.
Please speak out for the abused hunting dogs of Spain. They are the very same dogs as pet dogs! The same sentient beings who deserve to be cared for and who have rights to a good life. They need to be protected by the same laws.Same Dogs. Same Law.
Find the 7 differences! If you don’t see any, it’s because THERE ARE NONE.
Let it be heard loud and clear: SAME DOGS, SAME LAW. It couldn’t be more obvious!

Podenca Perla with Podenco Friends – ready for her forever home
From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends
‘This is Perla .. for adoption .. video
Back in February 2022 Kate Howey took in this very terrified Podenca that had been on the streets for some time.. Now 7 months on she is a much more confident girl and gets on well with all of Kates other dogs.
Perla is 3 years old has her passport vaccinated and spayed, approx 20 kilos she is playful but also calm and would be better placed with another dog in the home. She is not cat friendly.
Kate has tried to find her a home via other rescue groups but sadly no interest in Perla .. could we share her video and see if that forever sofa is out there for this very pretty girl.
