• Crippled, abandoned, starved in Cadiz, podenco Nino needs foster and adopting home

Nino Cadiz 2 04 04 2011 250 Some years ago I met a small galga who was rehabilitated by Paul and April Carrier of Alpha Dog School, Rota, Cadiz – sadly victims of the recession. This galga had been confined to a small cage during her puppyhood to such an extent that she had curvature of the spine, resulting in a skippy walk – hence her name of Skippy. She was unsurprisingly a happy little galga in spite of her maltreatment as a puppy.

Here is another example of maltreatment, this time a little podenco. Here is the story of Nino, a small podenco found malnourished, abused and abandoned in Cadiz

  • Cordoba podenco, rescued, have you room for him?

Cordoba podenco 2 04 2011 190 This is a plea for help for a lovely podenco rescued from the streets of Cordoba, luckily before being injured on the roads. I know all the refuges are full to bursting, but if anyone can squeeze him in, please contact Carmen below. Here’s his story.

‘Hi I found this little guy in Cordoba, at a junction of roads at the entrance of the city … I asked around the area,no one knows ….. some do not even look at you, let along the animals! He stood in front of the car in the middle of the intersection and what should I do? Avoid it and leave it there, alone in the middle of the road? I have a weimaraner very possessive and jealous but I could not leave this podenco there to his fate … so I need your help. He is a podenco X, no one wants a X.

  • Happy Endings Final Feliz – only not such a happy ending.

This story is a sample of some of the things which happen to the wonderful volunteers in Spain, struggling to help the abandoned dogs.

‘For the last year we have been arranging car boot sales every Sunday in a place called El Marquesado, and successfully got an income for the animals that need help in our area. It has been very hard workload on all our volunteers, but they have done the job without complaining. This car boot sale has been held on what we thought was wasteland as this was an unfenced, abandoned area. We were unable to find out if anyone owned it.

Braille blind pod to Fuerte 2 31 03 2011 250 This little podenco has been through horrendous suffering. Braille, run ower and left to die on the road. He lost both his eyes, sadly the vet could not save them, but he is happy and healthy in his foster home. But he really needs a forever home, and one has been found for him. BUT the problem is – Braille is in Granada and his adopting home is Fuerteventura.

  • Spending their lives in a shelter – can you change that forever?

SARA Lanzarote, Canary Islands. The only hope for podencos in their shelter is for them to be adopted in mainland Europe. These are beautiful dogs who deserve a life in a forever home. Please take a look at them. If they are not adopted, they will spend the rest of their lives in the shelter. The dogs are listed in alphabetical order, and their photos run in the same way. I would add that the descriptions say that they may hunt – but then again, what type of dog would not ‘hunt’ if a cat or deer ran past its nose?!

SARA Cachorro Braille 190 Cachorro Braile: He has been handed into our shelter by his owner on the 29th of november 2008, when he was only 2 months old. He is a very friendly dog with everybody, but in the same time very shy. If you take him out for a walk you need to force him at the start, but after a while he relaxes and enjoys it and is always looking out for the person with him. He is not interested in hunting.

  • Podencos make marvellous agility dogs – a good reason to adopt one!

Podencos are totally different characters from galgos – who like nothing better than to curl up on a comfy sofa and sleep! Podencos are working dogs and therefore can make marvellous agility dogs. Here are some videos of podencos in agility, and also a Pharoah Hound, a similar breed.

These videos have to be one of the best reasons to adopt one of these deserving dogs. You can find dozens of them waiting for forever homes and maybe an agility competitor in the weblinks in Podenco Pals. Or check out the list of podenco rescue associations listed.
