  • Podenco pup rescued from the roadside and safe with Podenco Friends

    Bev pup 400 29 1 2020
Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends tells the story of this lucky podenco pup.

‘This wee pup came to the finca yesterday (28/1/2020). Found alone by the roadside he made the best decision of his life. He didn’t run off when Ines stopped her van and she scooped him up and took him the vets in the village close to us. They called and asked if I can help so here he is. He is about 8 months old very skinny and at the moment overwhelmed with everything. We need to give him a name so any suggestions what we should call him.

Email Bev if you have a name suggestion.

  • STOP PODENQUEROS!

    Stop Podenqueros 400 1 2020
Although the podencos sometimes accompany the hunters, it is the dogs themselves that are used very often as hunting weapons by hunters.

The activity of hunting with podengos involves mass breeding, the selection of ” best ” individuals for that activity and the very abundant discarding of all dogs that do not ” give the size ” required by their owners. Descartes that carry their abandonment, they are deposited in perreras where they will be sacrificed if no one claims them, their sacrifice by unscrupulous veterinarians without scruples or ethics, or directly they are abused and killed by the same owners, in many terribly cruel ways.

No one comes to this world to be used to hunt and be discarded after, like a useless tool…
No one comes into this world to live a life of misery, chained, with barely food or water, in the weather or between excrement…

  • Podenca Carley – a happy forever home at last

    Bev Carley & PJ 400 1 2020
From Bev Farmer at Podenco Friends.

‘Back in April 2019 when a message came through asking for help with Carley & PJ the photo they sent struck a chord with me to see a Podenca taking a young galgo pup under her wing. Abandoned in the countryside entwined together I am sure it was Carley’s body warmth that had kept PJ alive, He was so thin he could not maintain his body temperature. When he arrived we needed to put two jackets on him to keep him warm.

What seemed a straight forward rescue soon changed, I never expected to have two seriously sick dogs. PJ had been born with a condition where his bile duct had not developed and the damage to his liver was beyond repair. Surgery was discussed with specialists but they didn’t think he would survive the Anesthesia, his liver was so compromised . So I took the decision to let him enjoy the time he had and when the day came he would close his eyes for the last time in my arm,s not on an operating table.

  • News from Hope for Podencos

2019 Summary – What a year 2019 was for Hope for Podencos and the extremes of weather that we experienced. Summer saw high heats and a lot of hard work to keep the dogs cool and hydrated. Heavy autumn rains luckily didn’t hit us as hard as other parts of Spain; but we helped some dogs that were affected in these areas.

Winter is always a difficult time at the centre. Many people associate Spain with sunshine but it is in fact freezing cold. Luckily our supporters did an amazing job in raising funds to get the dogs kitted out in cozy jumpers.

Renovation work took off at the centre, allowing us to help more dogs than ever before. We saw new kennels blocks built and old kennels and runs pulled down and new runs put up in their place. As a result, we saw an amazing 120 podencos rescued; compared to the 91 we were able to help in 2018.
