• Galgos112 – podenca pup with broken legs

    Galgos112 pup 1 400 10 2020
    From Galgos112

‘A couple of days ago we received a request for help for this precious little podenquita called Light. Luz was found at night lying in the gutter near the football field of a town in Jaén She couldn’t walk since she has two fractured front legs. She was admitted waiting for surgery to put plates on both legs. It has a good yet expensive forecast. Hopefully she can walk again soon and, after a few months of cures and rehabilitation, she will fully recover.

We’re asking for your help to pay the costs of the Light operation again. If you can collaborate even if only with little, for us and for Luz it will be a great help. We’ll be giving news of their evolution.

Thank you so much in the name of Luz!

  • Podenca Lolita with Akira Animal Shelter – hoping for a forever home

    Akira Shelter Lolita 400
    From Hayley at Akira Shelter

‘is Lolita she was known as the Moraira Carpark dog. She was notoriously difficult to capture and even with sausages that contained a sedative she still eluded everyone. She was eventually rescued and brought to Akira. She has gradually been building up her confidence and volunteers and staff spending time with her.

Lolita is now ready for a home she gets excited to go out for walks and enjoys being petted so he really needs a home to call her own.

She is vaccinated, chipped and has a passport so if you think you could open your heart to this girl to let her enjoy the life she always dreamed of then please contact us today. You can call +34 657 689 567 or email akirashelter@aol.com for more info about Lolita and the adoption process’

  • Patrulla de Patas – rescuing hounds in Granada

These 2 posts are taken from a recent newsletter posted on my Podenco Post facebook page. It illustrates what the wonderful volunteers have to cope with helping hounds in Spain.

    Patrulla pod 10 2020 400
    From Patrulla de Patas

    Irys

At 14.00 on the 09/30/2020, the volunteers at Baza dog pound were told about a dog tied up on the motorway near Granada, 100km away from Baza. A rescuer from Baza didn’t hesitate to drive and find her. She found her not tied up, but in an absolutely horrendous state. It seems she had been there for over 4 days! Crawling around in pain, not eating or drinking.

She has a fractured pubic bone, and TWO BROKEN FEMURS! GOD ONLY KNOWS WHAT SHE ENDURED. In Baza there is no traumatolgist surgeon, so on the 10/10/2020 we were told by the Hospital Sur Granada that the extensive surgery she needs will cost 1236.20 €. In the Norte clinic Baza we have been told that she NEEDS SURGERY IMMEDIATELY, THE BREAKS ARE HORRIBLE AND IF THE BONE BEGINS TO FUSE BADLY THE PROBLEM WILL INCREASE. So Irys was booked in for surgery for the 02/10/2020. That meant we had to find all the money in time. Amazingly we raised ALL the money needed for the surgery and the Baza vet bill in less than a day.

Updates to follow after the surgery.

  • Podenca Crystal – caught and safe at Toronto

    Update from Bev Farmer.

‘On checking the crates at cargo no cable ties where on them to secure the crate door this is standard practise to use the cable ties. The crates are pre moulded around the rim of the door for them has a secondary backup if the lock on the door failed. Once the crates are secured in the hold they are covered by netting but when they went to remove the crates the crate door was open and no Crystal . There is no sign of damage to the crate that she had tried to break out she is a relaxed traveller. The locking mechanism was only turned half way not in the full lock position . At the moment an investigation is under away to establish why no cable ties on the crate CCTV footage is being checked at Heathrow so we wait to hear for their report ., The other issue the dogs were sent without their collars they were taped to the top of the crate . To try and remove a dog in such a risky situation just coming off a flight and no collar is dangerous.

  • Pray for Podenca Crystal – loose at Toronto airport!!!

    Bev Crystal 400 29 9 2020
    From Bev Farmer

‘Crystal Lost on the flight to Toronto !!!

Last night the flight arrived at Toronto every one was excited waiting at Cargo for the dogs to come through but when they did, 4 crates and just 3 dogs Crystal was missing.

There was a lot of confusion and at one point it was suggested she had never been boarded at Heathrow but why send the crate and no dog. The team at Cargo started an investigation and then a message came through a dog was loose on the runway. It was Crystal. The AirPort suspended flights and teams out in vans with searchlights looking for her. The weather was bad, heavy rain and poor visibility. If they got close to her she ran off. She must have been terrified for she has brilliant recall.

Rhonda was out in the pouring rain until the early hours helping to catch her but she had to attend to the other three dogs who could not be removed from the crates until all the necessary paper work was completed. The staff at Cargo told her to go back to the hotel with the other dogs, get a shower warm up and try to get some sleep. They continued to message through the night and early in the morning Animal Control would be on site to help catch Crystal.’

  • An update on Podenca Estrella – suffering from Ataxia

    GRA estrella 400 9 2020
From Sandy at Galgo’s Rescue Almeria.

This is the story of a little podenco, named Estrella. Like most podencos she was born in a dirty and dark typical hunter environment. Being born as a podenco in Spain usually means a bleak future perspective, a hard, ruthless and merciless life. A “life” of hunger and thirst, of cold and deprivation. To survive and get some food, you have to be the best hunter to please your owner.

This fragile little girl was born with ataxia, it means part of the brain that control stability was not developed. Because of her instability she was useless.

Luckily Estrella was saved by Antonio at the age of 2 months. She’s a lucky girl, she can have the chance to grow up in a better world and have a future that many “normal”podencos can only dream of.
