• Podenca Lisa still waiting for her forever

    Akira Lisa and Casper 5 2025 350
    From Akira Dog Sanctuary

Look at these 2, captured and looking incredibly guilty. Casper is currently pending reservations, but Lisa is still waiting, and she is going to miss her partner in crime when he leaves the shelter.

Lisa is a stunner, and she is not a huge podenco. She is a medium-sized, and she has her wirey hair. She is a lovely girl and is so affectionate with people. She is good with lots of dogs but needs a soft introduction to some. She is currently in a large group of dogs and definitely enjoys their company. We can help facilitate any intros if needed.

  • Canine lipomas – is there any treatment?

As already mentioned we recently lost our blind podenco Bocelli to inoperable stomach tumour. A couple of years ago he had a small lump removed from his chest and the vet said the problem could reoccur, which it did.

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – update on the recently rescued podenca

    GAR Luna 5 2025 350
From Sandy at Galgos Rescue Almeria

We have named the little podenca who recently came into our care Luna. Despite her fragile figure and the tough past she undoubtedly carries with her, she showed herself to be brave and strong when we took her to the vet where she underwent a full check-up. Her weight is still on the low side, but with loving care and the right nutrition, that is only a matter of time. Her ears were carefully cleaned and everything was checked carefully.

Because her immune system is still vulnerable, we decided to only have an identification chip placed today and to take a blood sample. Fortunately, that sample brought good news: Luna tested negative for the most common Mediterranean diseases.

  • Abandoned and starving – rescued by Galgos Rescue Almeria

From Sandy at Galgos Rescue Almeria

On Friday we received a call: could we offer a safe place to a podenca in need. An animal that was wandering around, vulnerable and alone. Of course we couldn’t say no. On Saturday morning the redeeming message arrived: she had been safely captured in the trap. Her hunger turned out to be greater than her fear. And thank goodness, because now she can finally receive the care she had been missing for so long.

What we found broke our hearts. A fragile, thin body, covered in ticks and emaciated by the hard life on the streets. But behind those scared eyes lies a soul that has never given up. We are now giving her all the peace, warmth and love she needs. Next week she will undergo a thorough medical check-up.

  • Laser Therapy for dogs

My galgo Polar had adamagedhine knee, an accident when he was 2 months old. Not recommended for an operation by 4 vets but I did find a young woman qualified to do laser treatment on animals, especially dogs. Polar had a few treatments and walked much easier after each one, but it was not something I could afford forever.

This weblink is to an article on laser treatment for dogs.

  • Stolen podenca – still not found

    Stolen podenco 5 350
This heartbreaking appeal was circulated on Social Media Mid May. Sadly Ayra has still not been found, suspected stolen.

PLEASE SHARE – One of our podencos has been stolen in Spain. IT’S AYRA! She is 11 years old.

Thursday evening May 15, Ayra and Thor were walking near Orgiva and were taken (stolen) in a car to Zaidin Granada according to Thor’s Tracker GPS. They both have a name tag with name and phone number on it. We’ve been putting up flyers near where they were last and can only hope for one thing that we’ll find them soon. Every day there’s 1 too many.

There’s already a complaint with Guardia Civil for theft. If you have any information please call

Last known location they were taken to Zaidin Grabada

  • RIP Bocelli – the blind podenco

    Bo face 1 400
The reason for a lack of news in the past few days is that our blind Podenco has crossed the rainbow bridge to join the rest of our enormous pack of deceased hounds and his passing has left a huge hole in our lives because he was a particularly special dog.

Bo as he was known came to us in November 2021, rescued from a starved chained life in Lorca by Ibizan Hound Rescue. Blind Dog Rescue UK took on the task of finding him a forever home, which was us. He was special because he was blind, could only differentiate between shadow and black. He never ceased to amaze us how he confidently found his way around using his ears and nose. Walked outside of our enclosed garden, he was always on a Blind Dog harness. He learned to walk up a ramp into the back of the car because he was too heavy for us to lift. People always wanted to know about him and how he coped – he was a wonderful advertisement for adopting a blind dog.
