Podencos on Ibiza – abandoned to survive as best they can

What most tourists to the Island of Ibiza don’t see.

ROMERO is one of the unwanted podencos living on the streets of Ibiza.

Some animal protectors care touchingly about the animals, many tourists alert us and other organizations on the run, others just want to get rid of the uninvited, unloved inhabitants of the island. Many of the wild living podenco/mixes do not survive the cold winter, often suffer from hunger or thirst, are injured and then go crazy.

However, some are being caught by the responsible authorities in order to get them off the streets and together with, for example, us, we are working to give these lovable creatures a perspective. Our job is to socialize such dogs, because many people underestimate it. A very intensive and time-consuming, individual work! Just because a dog in the wild comes to your hand to fetch food from you, doesn’t mean that he will be touched, you can accustom him back to a collar or leash and you can integrate him into YOUR home life. can.

Dogs like Romero and his wild friends are accustomed to living on their own, more like survival, and first see us humans only as food donors and not as friends or potential homes, because they have each other as a pack. A bond that is very strong and self-sufficient and they love.

But what is the result when the animals reproduce wildly on the island at a rapid pace?! We often wish we had so much money that we could give the wild animals a large, protected area, which is vetically controlled, where there are feeders, maybe the island will make something for visitors to present their history in a protective way for visitors and island lovers, because the Podencos and their mixes belong to Ibiza, like  the hippies and the clubs. But they hardly have any rights to protect them.

Romero is now safe and can develop at his pace with us. Welcome you sweet, rough haired face.
