  • Podenca Canario Mami – saved from starvation on Gran Canaria

    Mami 1 Peter Pod 250 09 2011 It’s easy to overlook that the popular holiday desinations of Ibiza and the Canary Islands are also part of Spain. Whilst Ibiza is quite close to the mainland, the Canary Islands are down in the Atlantic off the coast of West Africa. Life on these islands is hard for the animals – many used by tourists – whilst hundreds of others are used for hunting. Luckily there are rescue associations picking up the pieces, but the only hope of a life for an animal outside an animal shelter or refuge is to be adopted on mainland Europe.

    This is the story of Mami, a Podenco Canario, whose mouth was taped up before she was dumped in the mountains on Gran Canaria, abandoned to a slow and painful death.

  • Petition the Spanish Government – fight for the galgos and podencos of Spain

    Galgos in cage 230 Bulletin des Levriers In partnership with Urgence-animaux, le Bulletin Des Lévriers has launched a new worldwide petition to ask for the ban of hunting with Spanish Greyhounds (Galgos) in Spain. In 2009, we sent the 20.000 signatures which we had we collected thanks to Care2 to the Spanish Minister of the Environment. Let’s mobilize again to show the Spanish government that people around the World do not give-up on abused Sighthounds in Spain and that ill-treatments, very real, of Galgos and Podencos in Spain has to stop.   • Valencia podenca rescued from starvation – needs her forever home

    Dora 1 250 EDL 09 2011 The resilience of dogs never ceases to amaze me – and their capacity to forgive humans too. This podenca was rescued starving and near death’s door in the Valencia area. You can see from the photo when she was rescued that she could barely stand – just skin hanging on a skeletal frame.

    Dora, as she has been named, is now in Madrid in a foster home, living with other dogs and cats – so no problem living with cats. She have recovered her health and enjoys playing with her toys – and going for walks with her foster mom.

  • Young podenco in Albacete killing station – please can someone save him?

    Albacete perrera mouruno 2 250 This beautiful boy is Mourino, just a year old and already in the Albacete killing station. He desperately needs a foster or adopting family urgently, as the shelters are full. Being young, he’s active and needs training, so he needs an enclosed garden and regular walks.

    L’Europe des Levriers desperately want to get him out of the killing station, along with his companion Podo, as they are seriously at risk of being taken by the galgueros. These two boys urgently need someone to give them a chance of a forever life. Please contact them if you can help.

    There are increasing numbers of animal cruelty cases and people who come across them, often don’t know how to make an official complaint (denuncia) to the police. Seprona, the environmental arm of the Guardia Civil, has given the Costa Animal Society this set of guidelines on what to do.

  • Costa Animal Society, Nerja – volunteer help needed for animals and committee

    CAS Strella 250 08 2011 This beauty with special eyes is Strella – she is one of 6 hunting dogs which the owner didn’t want, so he left them all tied up, starved of food and water. The owner wants rid of them asap so foster homes are urgently required.

    CAS is appealing on their behalf. CAS is the Costa Animal Society based in Nerja
    on Spain’s eastern Costa del Sol. It was founded in 1986 as a registered charity for
    the sole purpose of helping abandoned and maltreated animals.

  • Petite Podenca Pizca from Palencia, Spain, appealing for a forever home

    Pizca4 Amigos der Milord 250 This little beauty is called Pizca; she’s a young rough-haired podenca who has been with Amigos de Milord association for over a year. Cristina, of the associations, says ‘she has been here for a year and I have no adopting home for her, and it hurts to think she will be in a cage all her life. She is really small, spayed, vaccinated, loving and good with other dogs – male and female – but not with cats.’
