  • Podenco Portuguese puppies – waiting for forever homes

    Wanda and puppies  190 4 2015Here is a story about an abandoned podenca – an all too common story in Spain.

    I am a Canadian living in Valencia, Spain for the past 2 years. I have been overwhelmed by the stray dog crisis in this country. I have tried to help in different way and ended up adopting 4 large dogs that now are happy living with me

    Last week, we found a Podengo Portuguese 2 blocks from my place in an empty area. She had given birth to 6 puppies and was always barking when anybody got close. We started visiting daily and taking food to her and the pups. We finally decided to go in and catch her, who was very protective of her puppies and with the help of professional rescuers we got them all.

  • Podencos – A national treasure or just trash?

    What is about Podencos that incite such passion for them….. for me I see beauty nobility intelligence a creature so unique and magical, those who have adopted one will understand how special and sensitive they are. These should be the national treasure of Spain to be held in reverence to be proud of…. such a truly magnificent creature they should be recognized has part of the national heritage of Spain for they date back to 3000 BC. Yet daily we receive more and reports of Podencos abused, abandoned handed in to Perreras.

  • Portuguese Podengo – rescued from the streets, needs her forever home

  • Podencos – Enano, Maneto, Canario, Ibicenco, Orito, Andaluz, Campanero

    I’ve been writing about and publicising the plight of the podencos for many years – alongside my work for the galgos. Here’s an article I wrote about the different types of podenco. Unlike the galgo of which there is only smooth haired and rough haired, the podenco varies from the Enano and Maneto which are small like a dachshund up to the large Campanero which is shaggy and used to hunt wild boar. A podenco to suit every home!
