  • Cas International takes the Fight for Spanish Hunting Dogs to the European Parliament,

While Spain continues to exclude hunting dogs from basic protection under national law, EU-level legislation and enforcement could ensure these dogs are finally protected across all Member States.

On Tuesday 27th January the European Parliament in Brussels hosted an important event to raise awareness about the cruel treatment of Spanish hunting dogs and the need for protection.  Director, Maite van Gerwen, was one of the speakers. She shared insights on the new EU regulation on the welfare of dogs and cats and explained how these rules could bring significant improvements for hunting dogs. (more…)

  • SOS Podenco Rescue – Podenco Abel hoping for his forever home

Meet Abel – the quiet soul waiting for his chance .
    Age: 2 years
    Size: 55cm | approx. 16kg (medium)
    Dog-friendly
    Cat-friendly

Abel is one of those special dogs who doesn’t rush into life, he watches, listens, and takes everything in quietly. He’s shy with new people, but once he realises you are safe, you can touch and handle him without any issue. He has a very gentle, cooperative nature.  With other dogs, Abel is calm and social. He isn’t playful right now, but he enjoys being part of the group and draws confidence from canine companions. With time, patience, and kindness, we believe he will blossom into a more expressive dog.  Abel isn’t asking for much, just someone who will see past a shy exterior and give him the space to feel safe. • Podenca Tila – A Spanish Agility Champion

    From Bev Farmer

Tila — a rescued Podenco and RFEC Agility Champion of Spain 2025.

I’ve followed Adrián Granda for several years watching his incredible journey with Tila. Once again, for the third time, she has won her group at the Spanish Championships.

Tila’s story began in the most humble of places. She was one of three tiny pups in a pet shop that helped local rescues find homes. At just 3 months old, Adrián adopted her… who could have imagined then, that this little Podenco would grow into a three-time agility champion? (more…)

This is my definitive guide to the Podenco – how they went from revered companions to royalty to on death row in a Spanish perrera.  There are several different types of podenco, depending on whereabouts in Spain and the Spanish Islands they come from  This is the perfect Xmas present for anyone wanting to know more about the Podenco.

All sale proceeds are donated to appeals for help with vet fees from Spanish rescue associations.

  • Galgo Project EU – looking for information from shelters

Galgo Project EU is a Dutch organisation dedicated to supporting, rescuing, and giving a voice to galgos and podencos. They work closely with Spanish shelters, help dogs find safe homes, and raise awareness about the structural mistreatment these dogs still suffer.

With Galgo Project EU, we’re gathering data, testimonies, and concrete evidence to build a detailed dossier for the European Parliament. Our goal is clear:

To hold Spain accountable for not applying Article 13 of the Lisbon Treaty, and to push for equal, EU-wide protection of all dogs, including galgos and podencos, without exceptions. (more…)

  • Podencos for adoption

There are dozens of podencos spending months and longer in refuges, shelters and foster homes. Please remember them if you would like to offer one a forever home. Here’s a list of associations to contact, by country, if you can help.

And for every podenco homed from a refuge, the association can rescue one from a perrera. It’s heartbreaking how many podencos are dumped in perreras by the hunters – especially on CESE which means ‘fast track to killing’! And if a perrera is full, podencos are the first dogs to be killed to make room for incomers!

  • SARA Lanzarote – saving animals in the Canary Islands

SARA Rodrigo 190I mention many times how hard it is for the podencos in the Canary Islands to find forever homes. The SARA Lanzarote newsletter popped into my mailbox today and I couldn’t believe that Rodrigo, this beautiful podenco, is still in the SARA shelter – 5 years on! He’s a failed hunter, good to walk on a lead, good with children and adults and other dogs. Surely there must be someone somewhere who has a place in their heart for him?

They have donzens of deserving podencos there, amongst all the other dogs, please contact them direct if you can help Rodrigo or any of the others.
