  • Galgos France – helping the Gran Canaria podencos

Galgos France logo 400Galgos France working with two British podenco rescue associations. News from GF website.

17/2/2017 Two of our protégés came out last week from the hell of the Canary pound: Bryonny and Rosetta are in a pension in Tenerife while waiting to leave for Irene in Alicante (Hope for Podencos) who will take care of them and arrange supplementary tests while awaiting adopters.

They will join Tianna who will soon leave with host family in the United Kingdom and Erica.

So there are 6 podencos sponsored by Galgos France that are still impounded. Penelope, Sweets, Spinet, Smiley, Lottie and Nancy …. Hopefully they survive until their release …

  • Podenco Canarios Romeo and Valentino – from perrera to forever homes

Patricia Herrera 2 250I’ve always advertised the Canary Islands podenco rescue associations as they desperately need help to rehome these fabulous hounds. Here’s a lovely story about two of them rehomed with Patricia Herrera and her husband.

‘After finding out just how easy it was to adopt a podenco from Gran Canaria through the Saving the Gran Canaria Podencos page, thanks to the amazing help of a certain wonderful someone … I decided that one podenco is never enough and decided to get a pod pal for Valentino, who at 1 needed a playmate as my other dogs are 11, 12 and maybe 16 years old!

As you can see it was a rip roaring success and Romeo and Valentino adore each other and coming from the perrera were both very well socialised and surprisingly also house trained despite their harsh upbringing.
Podencos are such beautiful, gentle and sensitive dogs they can find pound life unbearably stressful and often give up eating and lose the will to live and are so terribly grateful for being saved and shown the love they have longed for all their lives so adopting or fostering is incredibly rewarding.

  • Gran Canaria – reality of life for podencos behind the sunshine and sangria

Black podenca Emmi Animales GC 3 2016 250Gran Canaria – This black podenca was beaten to kill her and dumped in a trash bin. She was found, barely alive, rescued and taken to a vet. Karen, a Belgian podenco passionata who herself has a black podenca, has written this tribute to Emmi – who is bravely hanging onto life with enormous care from the vet team and volunteers.

    Sweet Podenco girl,
    Posting this picture on FB
    could make people turn away
quickly scrolling past the horror done to you…
But then no one would ever know you
    nor about your fight
    and that of good people
    for your precious Life.

  • Nightmare in Mogan, Gran Canaria — seeking podencos and justice for them!

Mogan full cages 250You may remember I reported a situation in Mogan, Gran Canaria, where about 90 podencos were incarcerated in metal cages in a remote valley. Yesterday a team of volunteers and members of the municipality went to the site to take the dogs. They found the cages empty, frightened podencos roaming around the valley. Here’s the story as posted on facebook. I’ve asked for a ‘polite’ letter in Spanish for us to send to the Mayor of Mogan to encourage him to search for the owner of the dogs and prosecute him. Will run the campaign when I receive it.

  • Puerto Mogan, Canary Islands…what the tourists don’t see

Hundreds of thousands of people flock to the Canary Islands on holiday, whether for summer sun or to escape the cold winters of the UK and Europe. They don’t come into contact with ‘real’ life on the Islands, especially the nightmare for the 85,000+ podencos incarcerated there. Here’s the true reality…Perrera Mogan! Please share.

  • Helping the Lanzarote podencos – why we do it

Rick Beauchamp is a volunteer for SARA Protectora on Lanzarote, Canary Islands. He helps rehome rescued podencos in the UK. He writes about why he does it.

Very often people ask us why we bother rescuing dogs from Lanzarote when there are so many homeless here in the UK?

Our answer I feel rarely convinces, as you have to see the suffering of the dogs to really appreciate why we feel that we have absolutely no choice but to try and help.

Recently we came across this article on the SARA website www.saraprotectora.org.
I have transferred the article verbatim as it adds to the poignancy.

  • Podenco Canario Lisa – happy in a forever home

TARA Lisa 250It’s always great to have a happy homing story. Here’s one about a lucky Podenca Canario rescued and rehomed by TARA association.

‘LISA joined the TARA family 11 months ago when she was found on a goat farm that was soon christened “hell” Some caring tourists had stumbled across this place, and could not believe the conditions the animals were kept in.

Everyday they took food and water to the dogs, and knew they wanted to help some escape these conditions. They contacted TARA and asked for help, and we stepped in to ensure that at least some of the dogs could be saved.

  • Cheap Accommodation on Gran Canaria now available

In February 2014, as a result of a complaint made to Seprona (Society for Protection of Nature in the Civil Guard), a ‘person of Spanish Nationality’ was charged with the crime of abuse and neglect of animals in the village of Vallebron, in the municipality of La Oliva. On his farm were six Podenco Canarios, two already dead, the others were starving. The place also did not meet adequate requirements for the protection of animals.

This is the harsh reality of life for the tens of thousands of podencos living on the Canary Islands. It’s what the tourists don’t see. Please share the story and tell them!
