  • Galgos del Sur, Cordoba – saving puppies dumped as waste

Galgos del Sur 4 pups 250My name is Patricia Almansa and I´m the head of Galgos del Sur, a little animal organization from Córdoba, Andalucía (South Spain). We have a big problem with podencos, nobody ask for they and we didn´t find any organization who help them.

The last case is very urgent. We rescued 4 podenco puppies one week ago from a dumpster (ribbish bin). They were in a bag closed with tape. Just in Córdoba we have a heat wave with temperatures higher than 45º; if we hadn´t found in this moment then I´m sure they would have died soon. They have a lot of ticks, wounds, it took us 3 days to take out everything and clean them.

We need help to find good homes for the little podencas, they can´t grow in a kennel. Could anyone help us? There is one boy Bruma (first pic), and 3 girls Arena, Brisa and Marea

  • Cordoba, Spain today – the reality – Podenco puppy – bait for fighting dogs

Badol burned face 1709th April 2014 – Spain today, a place where animals are tortured and abused.

This is Badol. He is a podenco puppy who appeared on the street of a small village in Andalucía. The vet thinks he was used for sparring with pittbulls as he has bites on him, and then was burnt. Escaped or dumped, no one knows, but he wandered the streets in this condition for a few days before he was rescued. Nuria Martín Barcos has the shelter La Guarida in Córdoba. She always does a great job. She is an exceptional person. She has more than 200 dogs. Badol, the puppy, is now at the hospital, under the care of the protective Puente Genil.

  • Seville – podencos for hire for hunting!

I’m still stuck in the UK because of snow, and struggling to post. Here’s a story I received earlier this week, emailed on to associations I hope can help, and now post you the story. Apologies though, as I’m using a computer which won’t allow me to post pix.

‘On January 6, 2013 I drove with my husband and adopted dog (from a perrera near Malaga, ‘El Paraiso’) from Tarifa to Seville, and on to Cordoba.

We stopped at a rural restaurant for coffee where I became aware of a whole lot of dogs crying somewhere in the vicinity.

  • Cordoba podencos needing forever homes

Lovely video of the Baas Galgo podencos which were in the Villa del Rio shelter, Cordoba. The association was given notice to leave by the beginning of November (nothing the association had done wrong, the place is owned by galgueros!) If you can offer a forever home to any of the pods, contact the associations on the video, direct.

  • Cordoba, 3 young podencos – desperate situation, please anyone!

Cordoba podenco 250 1 11 2012Appeal in today.HELP desperate: The spoils of hunting in Cordoba. Story from the volunteer.

‘This is what hunting brings, hundreds of abandoned animals when they can no longer serve, whatever age, race or sex. This is an urgent case, like everyone else, but it’s terrible to see them thus knowing what they are going through. They are 3 podencos: one male and two females, all very young.

They are abandoned in an industrial estate where it is common to have clandestine sheds where hunters breed dogs and have them without seeing the light of day, only when they take them to hunt, in sub-human conditions. When they do not hunt, this is what happens: begging in the area, skin and bones, hardly having the breath to survive.

  • Update from Cordoba University Vet School on Podenca Tanke

Good news about podenca Tanke from Laura, the vet student at Cordoba University. They have taken an x-ray of Tanke’s lung and it is clear, she hasn’t got metastisis. They also have enough money to operate on her next Monday (29/10) and will keep us up to date. If everything goes ok, Laura says Tanke will be ready for adoption by the middle of December.

  • University Vet Students lend a hand in Cordoba

Tanke street 10 2012 250Laura writes from Cordoba. ‘We are some students of veterinary medicine in Cordoba (Spain) and 2 weeks ago we found an old female podenco here. This is the story……..please help us:

This is Tanke, she is a female Podenco Andaluz dog about 10 years old. She is educated, really lovely and obedient.

She was found battered and abandoned 2 weeks ago in Cordoba (Spain). When we found her, she had a huge wound where the microchip was before. Now she is cured…..but during the veterinary examination, it was discovered that she has crystalline sclerosis and retinal atrophy, so she will lose sight gradually.

  • Cordoba – Podenco Bonito – saved from the streets

Bonita 250Outside of the city centres of Spain, it is very frequent to see an abandoned dog wandering around, or in a ditch, or knocked down at the side of a road, or already dead.

This young podenca was the latest find by this volunteer. Here’s what she says.

We have called her Bonita. She was found undernourished, dehydrated and from the state of her breast, she has obviously just been used for breeding. She has a lot scars, an ancient one which could be the result of a trap, we’re not sure.

We even do not know if the vet will be able to save it, at present she is on daily medication, and will see in a few days is it improves. The problem is there there is no sensitivity in the leg.
