  • Cas International takes the Fight for Spanish Hunting Dogs to the European Parliament,

    While Spain continues to exclude hunting dogs from basic protection under national law, EU-level legislation and enforcement could ensure these dogs are finally protected across all Member States.

    On Tuesday 27th January the European Parliament in Brussels hosted an important event to raise awareness about the cruel treatment of Spanish hunting dogs and the need for protection.  Director, Maite van Gerwen, was one of the speakers. She shared insights on the new EU regulation on the welfare of dogs and cats and explained how these rules could bring significant improvements for hunting dogs. (more…)

  • Galgo Project EU – looking for information from shelters

    Galgo Project EU is a Dutch organisation dedicated to supporting, rescuing, and giving a voice to galgos and podencos. They work closely with Spanish shelters, help dogs find safe homes, and raise awareness about the structural mistreatment these dogs still suffer.

    With Galgo Project EU, we’re gathering data, testimonies, and concrete evidence to build a detailed dossier for the European Parliament. Our goal is clear:

    To hold Spain accountable for not applying Article 13 of the Lisbon Treaty, and to push for equal, EU-wide protection of all dogs, including galgos and podencos, without exceptions. (more…)

  • European Collective for Protection of Greyhounds & Galgos

    European Collective for protection of Hounds logoTogether with several organisations, notably Galgos Ethique Europe and l”Arche de Levriers, Greyhounds Rescue Holland has worked on the foundation of the Collectif Europeen pour la protection des Levriers, in English known as the European Collective for the Protection of Hounds.

    Following discussions and consultations with the office of the Member of European Parliament Mrs. Striffler, (she is the MEP who marched with us in Strasbourg in March 2012), it is clear that the only way forward is a collective and sustained effort by European organisations and European participation of the public. No small feat indeed and we are well aware that it will be a difficult uphill climb. But the bigger the challenge, the stronger the determination!

  • SOS Galgos, Barcelona, fighting to save the galgos and podencos

    On 9th June SOS Galgos attended the first international demonstration in defence of Spanish galgos in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The protest condemned the cruelty suffered by galgos at the end of the hunting season. The demonstration was supported by Euro MP, Michèle Striffler. Protests echoing these demands took place in Madrid and Barcelona the following day. (Anna Clements & Jerome Guillot)
