We sometimes question the wisdom of spending valuable and scarce resources on saving very sick or injured animals but, given the choice, I’m sure we would all make the effort. How many lovely stories have we read about hounds saved – Esperanza, Alphonso, Ulysees, and now Miel. Here is a wonderful story about a blind podenco in Portugal, rescued sick, starving, injured and blind from a major road. Aanifeira gave her a chance – here’s her story.

Helping a chained dog
There is a belief in Europe that guard dogs should be chained up. There is also a belief in Europe that any dog can be chained up, many of them without even shelter. I see it here in France – a border collie chained up in a farmyard particularly angers me. Podencos also suffer this maltreatment and Aaniferira, a Portuguese animal rescue association, have published a piece about dealing with the problem. You can read more about it here.
