Yuma born Dec 2021
Yuma is a stunning large podenca, she is a gentle girl but is anxious of visitors and will require an experienced foster or adopter to help her adjust
Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends has done a tremendous amount to raise the profile of Podencos – not quite so ‘Invisible’ as they were 12-15 years ago when I first started to foster some back in 2007. Here Bev shares the story of how she and her late partner Warren became involved with these wonderful hounds.
‘Angela .. the first senior podenco we rescued back in 2013.
I collected Angela from the perrera, she was 12 years old and surrendered by her owner. When I reached to pick her up I prepared myself for the weight of an adult dog. I took in a sharp breath as it was like picking up a puppy, she was so thin. She had a lot of health issues, a huge hernia her ear was a mess and her kidneys were failing.
Everyone should have at least one!
Hope for Podencos was started several years ago by Irene and SteveAllan. Sadly Irene died in 2020 and Steve is no longer able to continue with the rescues and is returning to the UK. Galgos del Sol are amongst the podenco rescue associations working to take over the podencos still in his care.

‘2 podencos found in an abandoned concrete pit with these contraptions in their mouths so they couldn’t bark or eat. Scratch marks all over the walls where they had desperately tried to get out. Rescued by Galgos del Sol. Video at the shelter, on this weblink.
Back in 2007 when I first travelled to Spain with L’Europe des Levriers to bring rescued galgos and podencos back to our French home for foster and adoption, Galgo News was started. One of the first people to contact me for help in publicising galgos in shelters was Tina Solera, then a volunteer who discovered an injured galgo needing help. It’s been interesting to follow the work of Tina since then with her association Galgos del Sol, to the shelter she now presides over. See the video on this weblink
From Lidia Martinez in Badajoz, Extramadura, a terrible place for hinting dogs.
‘I introduce myself I am Lidia Martinez and I am a teamer and collaborator of El Refugio de Brown in Zafra Badajoz, her situation is very hard, there are only two people managing more than 100 animals, at a cost monthly of € 2,000 or more in veterinary and residency expenses, already they do not have their own premises, as the city council evicted them from its facilities and also many animals from the kennels from Extremadura and Andalucia.
Please we ask you to value the possibility of being part of these groups since all help is fundamental and donations are desperately needed.
I leave you the link to their website so you can know them a little more and the links of their two groups.
Spanish Animals in Not is an association in Malaga and they have some Podenco Invisibles who desperately need forever homes – currently in foster in Malaga.
BONNIE, female, 2 years old. Totally healthy, with everything up to date. A reall sweet small Podenca who will blossom in a home. She’s been in the shelter for nearly 2 years.
LILLY female, 1 year old, 9.5kg , healthy, up to date.
PIPO PIPPI POLLY
These three babies were rescued with the intervention of Malaga firefighters. They were stuck in a hole in the Sierra de Antequera, crying inconsolably, a very difficult rescue.
The bastard hunters have no feelings – to abandon a podenca with part of a leg missing. This is the type of injury which can occur when the dog is trapped in an illegal snare.
Watch this Podenca go from desperate when rescued to wagging her tail with hope… even when shes missing half of her leg. She’s been named Horchita. Sadly she is nowhere near fit enough yet to be operated on.
During my years on rescues with L’Europe des Levriers we brought many tripods out of Spain to France for rehoming. We found that the ones with a high amputation coped much better than a couple who were left with a longer stump, as they often tried putting that leg down.
