  • Levriers du Sud save the Almeria perrera podenco pups

Do you remember these terrified babies in Almeria killing station? Two associations – one UK, one Holland, offered to take them, if someone local could rescue the babies and take them to foster or a shelter. They were finally rescued by Levriers du Sud and taken to a shelter, but sadly one of them died. The other two are now in foster care, looking for forever homes. Tthey’e been named Tanys and Gasby. Read about them here.

  • Pig or Podenco? More barbarity from the Spanish hunters or genetic mutation?

Bella nose 8 2012The barbarity of some Spanish hunters defies belief at times. This beautiful young podenca is a victim of one type of inexplicable cruelty – cutting the nose to make the podenca look like a pig! I’ve come across this before, twice we have brought podencos out of Spain who have suffered this barbarity. Poor Joy had problems drinking, as water tended to go up his nostrils – what was left of them. And his trauma….with a lot of love and patience, especially on the part of his foster family, over many months he became a very affectionate little chap.

This is Bella, and she urgently needs a foster home, as she is currently in a locked garage.

  • Abandoned in Cadiz – foster home needed urgently

Cadiz pod puppies 3 250These little chaps were abandoned together, found dehydrated and with a skin infection, for which they have received veterinary treatment. The two young women who are caring for them need to find a foster/adoption home for them before 3rd September, as they are moving into rented accommodation where they can’t take the pups. The boys have been named Wilson and House ( don’t ask!) Please contact 685429447 (Dani) o el 615447713 (Bárbara), http://facebook.com/podencosconil. Please also only associations, as the puppies don’t yet have a pet passport.

  • Podenca Beatrize – from Valencia to Devon, UK – settling in well.

Beatriz E Pendreich 190 8 2012At the beginning of July, I posted the story of Beatriz, a podenca rescued from Spain and now enjoying a new life in Devon. 6 weeks on, her Mom has written an update on her progress.

‘Having rescued beautiful podenca Beatriz from a little private rescue in Ontinyent, Spain, two months ago to a small farm in Devon, UK, she is now almost unrecognisable, temperament wise. She is still a little timid, especially with male strangers, but like all things, this will take time.

  • Albacete perrera, Spain – over 200 dogs due to be pts now!

Albacete per Golfus 2 yrs 250Last week I posted a comment from a volunteer in Spain, that many perreras kill ALL the dogs in August, because they want to close down completely for the holidays. Well, Albacete Perrera is going to do just that. Over 200 dogs are due to be pts any time now! Several of them are beautiful young podencos.

L’Europe des Levriers is the French association with whom I have travelled to Spain on many rescue missions. One of the refuges they work with is in Albacete. But they can’t cope with this massive programme of euthanasia.

If there any associations who can help with taking any of the podencos, please contact Alicia on edl.alicia@gmail.com

  • A Weak Moment – a Tale of Life with a Spanish hunter…

It’s a common sight on mainland Europe to see hunters in their vehicles, with a small box trailer towing their hunting dogs, squashed in, hardly room to breathe. In Spain, that country well known for sensible laws – I must be joking! – hunters merrily drive around transporting their dogs like that. Yet people licensed legally to transport dogs and cats can be targeted by the authorities. No doubt these authorities are hunters too. We all know they look after their own.

  • Deaf podenco Fanta – his Mom is a Bullas Babe – finds his forever family

Fanta 1 250 May 2012You remember the story of the Bullas, Murcia, rescue of 120 hunting dogs, mostly podencos. It’s great to follow the stories of their rehomings and here is a tale about a really special Bullas Boy, who was born deaf. Denise Heaton adopted him and tells his story so far.

‘Fanta’s story starts from when heavily pregnant Mama named Maya was rescued from the Bullas Camp by Ibizan Hound Rescue along with around 120 other dogs that went to various other rescues. On 4/4/12 Maya gave birth to 8 gorgeous pups under the care of Ibizan Hound Rescue fostered by Diane Hughes, who did a brilliant job with both Mum and her babies.

This photo is the very first one I saw of Fanta, and it made me fall in love with the little guy. I decided at that moment that I wanted to adopt him. A week or so later Diane Hughes & Valerie Wood contacted me to tell me the news that Fanta was profoundly deaf and asked if I still wanted to proceed with the adoption. I felt that the fact he was deaf shouldn’t make much of a difference only that it made him even more special.

Fanta 2 250On 27/07/12 I finally got to pick up my special boy in Birmingham. It was such a special moment to finally meet him along with his Mamma, Siblings & the other adopters & not forgetting Diane & Brian who transported them from Spain.

Fanta is a wonderful addition to our family and is no different from a hearing dog. His best friend is a little Shi Tzu boy called Bentley who I adopted from The Little Dog Rescue. They spend hours chasing and playing; it’s such a joy watching them.

Fanta responds very well to training through a series of hand signals and is a star at training class. I have had lots of wonderful advice from The Deaf Dog Network who also have a Facebook page and would urge everyone to join who is thinking of adopting a deaf dog.

You can find out more about Fanta and his siblings on our facebook page entitled Bullas Babes.

Lastly a huge thank you to Ibizan Hound Rescue for trusting me with the care of such a beautiful, special boy and of course the fabulous job they do saving these amazing dogs’.

Interestingly, I’ve known white cats which are deaf, and also a white boxer dog.

Aanifeira association in Portugal have written about one of their disabled dogs.

  • Cartagena, Spain, 2012 – hunters STILL hang galgos

This is a link to an article about a man who was out for a walk and came across two hanged galgos. It’s in Spanish, haven’t had time to translate it. If anyone can do so, your help will be appreciated.
