  • Who are ‘The Invisibles’?

    Los Invisibles 400
I’ve written before about the Podencos being known as ‘The Invisibles’. They also used to be called ‘The Great Forgotten’. Neither title is now true, as they are no longer invisible and are getting a name for themselves both as loving loyal pets and as agility dogs and there is a huge increase in the number of associations rescuing and rehoming them.

One could call black galgos ‘The Invisibles’ as they are the last ones to get adopted; many of them roam the campo starving and injured, dumped in perreras, languishing for years in shelters and kennels, overlooked for the more ‘colourful’ hounds. Yet with good food and exercise there is nothing more stunning than the shiny black coat of a black galgo…white, brindle…they can’t compare!

Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends says…’Whilst I am all for promoting the positive side of rescue… we need to have a reason to believe. The harsh reality is we are just a small solution to a much bigger problem, the Podencos are given the label “LOS INVISBLES” for good reason. Many languish in Shelters, forgotten, overlooked – some for many years (those are the lucky ones), others abandoned roaming the streets or the campo trying to survive. My dream is one day Spain will recognise the Podencos has part of the Spanish Heritage. Can they not see what a National Treasure they have here?’

  • When will they punish the right end of the lead?

    Debra Jefferson poem 400
I am a strong believer in controlling the mass over-breeding of dogs…galgos and podencos in particuler…but ALL breeds. The misery and suffering of dogs is caused by the human creature and so I publish here a thought-provoking verse by Debra Jefferson.

  • Galgo News & Podenco Post – the trailblazers of their time

    Happy Birthday podenco
Although Podenco Post was not launched until January 2011, it is 10 years ago today – 21st November 2007 – when my blog Galgo News was launched and 10 years in December since the first story about a Podenco was published (Jazmin, link below). The first of its kind, my remit was to give publicity to the plight of the galgos and podencos in Spain and the Spanish Islands, sharing information from the rescue associations working ‘on the ground’ and supporting them in their fundraising and efforts to rehome these fabulous hounds, so maltreated by the Spanish hunters.

Galgo News was born 3 years after facebook was launched, and was a trailblazer in promoting all aspects of galgos and podencos…especially the annual massacre and abandonment of tens of thousands of these innocent and loyal animals, so abused by their galgueros and cazadores.

Having had a greyhound in the UK, when I moved to France in 2002 I was searching for an association through whom I could adopt a greyhound again, and came across the galgo. I joined L’Europe des Levriers and in 2007 travelled with their team to Spain to collect my first galga, Karmel. I wrote an article on the trip which was published in the Weekly Telegraph and you can read the story of the trip on this weblink.

  • Greyhound Friends Netherlands – vote for them before 25th December 2017

I have received the following appeal from Greyhound Friends Netherlands. Please vote for them to help Scooby.

‘In our country is a contest going on called Serieus Request, the organization with the most votes wins €3500.

Greyhoundsfriends is participating this contest for Scooby. We want to win this amount of money for Scooby because they need new fences around the shelter and the quarantine kennels need urgent renovation.
We received many votes and our project is in the top 10 now.

People can vote only once with their email address, till 25th December.

I want to ask if you can help us realize this project for Scooby, the largest animal rescue shelter in Spain. They work so hard to rescue every animal they can, educating people, fighting against animal abuse, they deserve to win.
