Two weeks ago, a LARGE OPERATION of SEPRONA, the local police of Teguise and technicians of the City Hall took place to seize more than a dozen animals.

In an illegal depot with lots of dirt and garbage, rusted iron and animal carcasses, there were hunting dogs and livestock that had been kept in deplorable conditions and hidden from the eyes of tourists and neighbors for years.

In an unprecedented action on the 8th, SEPRONA seized more than 10 dogs, many of whom suffered severe muscle loss because they were chained for years and unable to move in a 1m2 cabin.

  • More unimaginable cruelty to a podenca

    White podenca 400 11 2021
    From Amores Peludos rescue.

Ears and tail cut with scissors, literally, with a rusty chain around the neck, skeletal, full of shit and blood, with huge mamary glands. My friend Loli had managed to catch this precious podenca, dead scared and cold,in the street and that’s why she will carry her name, for not looking away. As much as the podencos suffer in this damn country, they are cousins of the Galgos and the suffering is terrible.

My heart was broken when she came to us, but we have to fight one more time to return the dignity of an innocent angel. Welcome precious Loli to this great family of Furry Loves, your days of suffering are at their end, all your pain and suffering is already over, now you are a princess and it’s time to start writing the next chapter of your life, you have to be happy mi love. Thank you Loli for saving her life and thank you Anselmo for bringing her, you are amazing people.

  • Podencos – living a life chained to a wall – Galgos del Sur shows the suffering

    From Asociacion Galgos del Sur.

    Video link

Can you imagine a life like this?

365 days a year tied to a meter chain without being able to move, sleeping in concrete, without receiving the necessary love and attention. Only released for hunting. They feel fear and sadness, their life becomes a real hell.

It’s the life of suffering of podencos and other dog hunting from rehalas.

The Monteria and the Rehala was declared Good of Cultural Interest of Andalusia, and soon it will be in Extremadura.

  • Muzzle a podenco? Never!

    Podenco with muzzle 400
I have been involved with podenco and galgo rescue for 14 years. I’ve travelled regularly into Spain with a French rescue association to bring Spanish rescued galgos and podencos back to France for foster and adoption. I have NEVER met a podenco which needed to wear a muzzle!

I was horrified to see this photo, especially on a senior dog. Yet it should not be a surprise since the podenco seems to be with a greyhound from a UK retired racing greyhound rescue, some of whom believe every greyhound/galgo should be muzzled.

Since moving back to the UK in January 2021 I have met many greyhounds who are companion dogs and not one of them wore a muzzle. Naturally all were on leads when walked in public but their adopters had never felt the need to use a muzzle. To me, it creates the image that the dog is dangerous!

Have any of my readers felt the need to muzzle their adopted Spanish dog?

I’ve had an email from a reader to say dogs have to be muzzled on ferries. However, when we have travelled our dogs on ferries they are not muzzled as they travel in cages, as do the dogs on official pet transport. If the dog is loose in the vehicle, then they could be muzzled, perhaps?

  • Ciudad Animal Refugio – podencos already abandoned and hunting has only just started!

    Ciudad Animals podencos 400 28 10 2021
From Ciudad Animal, south of Madrid.

    Ciudad Animal Refugio Animales Abandonados

Hunting season just started 2 weeks ago and the kennels are already full of pods, galgos, brotons. Those dogs who care for hunters so much I wish that story was true.

With the galgos it seems that we are more conscious, we know how they are mistreated and used, but the podenco is the big forgotten. You don’t know the big problem there is. You don’t need to go to the Canary Islands to find dirty, without windows full of scared and hungry pods. In every manchego town there are workshops with so many podencos that are missing fingers to count them. We’ve been in this for many years and unfortunately little has changed.

A few days ago we were called from the kennel looking for help for several dogs and here we are again, with the kennel van full. Let’s try to find a new future for these 20 poor animals.

  • About the Podenco Canario – the type of podenco trapped in the lava flow on Las Palmas

    Podenco Canario 400 10 2021
From a newspaper report in LaVanguardia

‘Pending the rescue of the hounds in the town of Todoque de La Palma after the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano , we investigate a little more about the characteristics of this breed capable of adapting to extreme situations. Magnificent rabbit hunters, the Canary Hound is one of the most faithful breeds, greatly undergoing a change of family or environment, this is because it is considered an extremely empathetic breed.

The hound resists high temperatures and is very energetic, it can be hunting from sunrise to sunset without stopping to rest. Of Egyptian origin, it has a prodigious sense of smell and its hearing allows it to detect the presence of its prey in remote places. It is originally from the Canary Islands, the archipelago that gives it its name, and we can find it on all its islands, although with a greater presence in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

It is a very abused breed, in addition to being abandoned, which makes the Canary Hound very vulnerable. With a special sensitivity and highly developed senses, this breed has been commonly used for therapy for its tranquility and intuition. With strong and developed musculature, it is a slightly elongated medium-sized dog, with a well-developed chest and a broad head.
