  • Podenco Cookie – STILL waiting for his forever home

I can’t believe that this fabulous young podenco is STILL waiting for his forever home. Perfect for canicross, bike-joring, agility. Needs an active family.

Here’s what Hayle of Akira Dog Sanctuary says about his trip to the water park.

‘COOKIE’S DAY AT THE WATER PARK

A huge thank you to one of our volunteers who took Cookie to TRUST Canine Resort. He had a great time and we can’t believe he is still looking for his forever home. Cookie is brilliant travelling in the car. He loves to play. He loves other dogs and children. Cookie is house trained.

Cookie is such a lovable boy full of joy that you can’t help but fall for his charms when you spend a little time with him. We hope you will come and meet him. He is neutered and vaccinated. He can travel to the UK and other countries, please contact us for transport options.

  • Podenco Friends – complications in transporting rescued hounds

    Bev Sancho 5 2022 400
As if the marvellous volunteers in Spain working to save and rehome podencos and galgos don’t have enough stress in their lives, living with all the cruelty and abandonment, getting hounds to forever homes also brings its stresses. Bev Farmer tells of a recent nightmare she had to deal with.

‘Sancho should have been on a plane flying to Canada last weekend, along with Radley and Gawain, two more Podencos from Ibizan Hound Rescue. They travelled down in the evening with Brian, following morning all the dogs checked in at Malaga Airport and had gone through security ready to board the plane.

Then Rhonda and Denise (from Canada who were travelling with the dogs) set off to go through passenger security when they discover Rhonda’s passport is missing. Anyway, to cut a long story short the Supervisor for Air Transat at Malaga was rude, obstructive and wasn’t willing to help in any way. I was on the phone to Rhonda and I could hear what she was saying. The dogs’ crates were tagged to Rhonda’s boarding pass but the Supervisor refused to change them over to Denise’s boarding pass, even though other Air Transat personnel on duty at the check in desk asked her to do it.

  • Abandoned podencos – at risk of injury on main roads!

So upsetting, young frightened podenco loose on a main road near a shopping centre in Granada. So many podencos end up like this, risking serious injury. Hoping someone can get him to safety soon. Curses on the bastard Spanish hunters.

  • When a hunter dies – what happens to his Podencos?

    Dead hunter dog 1 5 2022 400
These 4 podencos were from a hunter who passed away very recently and the family can’t keep them. They need urgent adoption, we need to get them out of those chains, a lifetime tied up and now they finally have the chance to have a worthy home.

There are 3 males and a female (the brown one), all between 6-10 years old and are near Ontinyent (Valencia).

    Contact 656413422 Gloria.

Happy to report they are now safe with an association.

‘Congratulations to Tila and Adrián Granda who competed at the World Agility Open Championships last weekend (22 May) at Ermelo in the Netherlands.

They did the Podencos proud and came back with lots of ribbons.

Always a dream of mine that a Spanish Podenco could show the world what amazing dogs they are. Well done, chica.’

  • Love me like animals love….poignant poem

Beautiful poignant words which were on the facebook post about the terrified podenco in Jerez perrera.

IF YOU WANT TO LOVE ME…

    Love me like animals love,
with a love that is not postponed for later, with a desire that knows no middle ground, with the fidelity that is always taking care of us, and with the naked gaze that never criticizes.

    love me like animals love
with that tenderness that never manipulates,
with a silence that makes everything comfortable, without urgency and with all his presence, where there is no room for indifference.

    love me like animals love
with a tongue that does not hurt and if it kisses,
with a claw of courage that never threatens,
with that unconditionality that does not abandon, and with the peace of the true rational being.

    love me like animals love

  • Podenco Bonito – can live with cats

Akira Animal Sanctuary – Hayley talls us about Bonito, hoping for his forever home.

Our beautiful Bonito is like a rolled up spring, look how it goes! He’s very excited to spend a day with one of our dedicated volunteers who has taken him out many times before, so he knows what’s in store for him. He’s literally jumping for joy. He loves his chicken treats, cheese and some sausages. He also loves going in the car and feeling the wind in his face and taking in all the smells it brings.

Bonito is 2 years old and a calm soul with a sweet and sensitive character. He is friendly and loves cuddles. He loves playing with other dogs and is always a gentleman. He has lived with a cat in his previous home and slept together in the basket (that’s the sweet soul we talked about). Nice and clean in the house and good with kids too. He’s a wonderful family dog.

He is neutered, vaccinated and has a passport and microchipped. He can travel if necessary, please ask staff for information on arrangements. You can send an email to akirashelter@aol.aol or
    with whatsapp +34 657 68 95 67.

This beautiful podenca campanero has been waiting for an unbelievable 8 years in a shelter! Surely there is someone with room in their home and heart for her. Here’s her story.

    ‘(Contact: The Hairy Smile) (0034)652813071 M 65LAGA…

DID YOU LOOK AT HER WELL? THIS PRECIOUS PRINCESS SLEEPING BEHIND BARS FOR YEARS..

WITH A BROKEN HEART I PRESENT TO YOU NUBE (Podenca Bellanera) One of the “grannies” who has been waiting for a home for a long time. She already had a FAMILY waiting for her, but because she had LEISHMANIA fully controlled and because of a stupid law they DENIED her entry…. !! CONDEMNED!! SENTENCED TO DIE BEHIND BARS. I’M SO SORRY MY PRECIOUS GIRL

IT’S SOOOOOOOO COLD TO BE IN A SHELTER AT 8 YEARS OLD, SHE IS HAVING A BAD TIME, NEEDS A FOREVER HOME.. ARE YOU UP ?….. YOU WON’T REGRET.

We introduce you to Nube, a beautiful Belltard Podenca, of about 25 kilos and approximately 8 years old, rescued with wounds some time ago, positive to leishmania fully controlled, without symptoms or affected organs. We need sponsors for her, to pay for her full analysis, a seresto collar, monthly pipette and her leishmania treatment so that she continues without symptoms and practically.

Needs an active family, with another dog to live with, who likes strong dogs and will fall in love with this pretty face. She lives perfectly with dogs, is affectionate with people and in her 8 years of life she has never known a home, do you dare?
