  • Podenco Friends – Special treatment for Carley

    Bev Carley 400 29 8 2019
    From Bev Farmer 29 8 2019

‘We have agreed a treatment program for Carley she is going to start on Chemotherapy but this is an oral one that is in the form of a syrup. Its still a strong treatment but not like the one that Midas had and the main side effect she could get cystitis and then we would have to stop until it cleared up. So I have to ensure she drinks one and half litres of water a day to help the kidneys . Eduardo sat down and talked me through and showed me the medical journals explaining why she needs it and how it works basically its to try and stop the bad cells attacking the healthy cells in her body.

So it’s not a cure but to try and stop it spreading to other organs and we will do monthly xrays and ultrasounds to check. She may need the chemo for 3/6 months and a specialist pharmacy has made it ready and tailored it for her . We can’t estimate how much it will extend her life but looking at the data in the journals and case studies some have lived for months and others years so lets hope for Carley its the latter .. I am comfortable with this and we can always stop if it makes her ill .. I have got to give her a chance and in her favour at the moment she is bright and happy and looking so well.’

  • Protectora La Bienvenida, Cuidad Real – Podenca Avena looking for a forever home

    La Bienvenida Avena 400 8 2019
Back in 2007 my first rescue trip with French association L’Europe des Levriers was to Cuidad Real, 200 km south of Madride and to the Protectora La Bienvenida, where I met my first galga Karmel to bring home. The shelter is still working hard to help the abandoned and maltreated animals of the area – especially it is not a good area for galgos. And they have some podencos, here is one of them waiting for her forever home. I have translated the first paragraph from Spanish, if you wish to read more, copy and paste into a Spanish to English translator, which is what I do.

‘Avena and Muesli are two ultra nice podenquitas. Probably, Avena became pregnant in the first heat and Muesli is the result of it. It is rare that only a puppy has arrived which makes us think that the rest have been distributed and for them, nobody asked or there was no more space for what they were thrown into the street.’

You will find some more podencos as you scross through the rest of the pages.

  • Podenco friends – Update on Carley

    Bev Carley 400 24 8 2019
Update on Carley, from Bev Farmer.

‘Carley had her xrays and ultrasound this week and it wasnt the news I needed to hear … the cancer has spread to one of her lymph glands but her lungs are clear. They cant operate and remove the lymph gland its attached to an artery . They have recommended chemo to slow it down but there are no guarantees.

So here I am again having to make the difficult decision what to do that is best for for her. It would be the same treatment protocol Midas had a number of sessions via IV and then with tablets. At the moment I feel life is so unfair Carley is a gentle soul so kind natured she does not deserve this.

(Pinky) The Protective Society of Animals and Plants of Cádiz, better known as “Kimba Shelter”, was founded in 1872 and is therefore the oldest Animal Protective in Spain.

Although in its origins the protection of the plants was mainly its exclusive purpose, finally and in 1966 the refuge was created that would house the abandoned animals.

Since then the work that has been developing this Protective, includes different paths but always aimed at the same purpose … the defense and protection of animals.

  • Gran Canaria on fire!

A Canarian soccer player has offered his farm and barns for rescued animals. Report on this link.

And a report from PACMA. I’ve asked for a link to the petition if it is still running.

The #Canaryislands have become the last years in a pleasure of dogs and other animals used to hunt, which badly and die in unfortunate circumstances.

Another year, the victims of political neglect are still the same, and while there are no representatives of pacma in our mayors, municipalities and Parliament, they will continue to have no voice in the institutions. The path to the dignity of animals will continue to look eternal.

  • Podenco Friends – HINGA FOR ADOPTION IN THE UK

    Bev Hinga 400 12 8 2019
    From Bev Farmer.

‘The first photo is where we rescued Hinga from in Gran Canary that was her life chained to a wall with green rancid water and little food. She is 5 years old and before been rescued she lived in a darken building in temperatures over a 100ºf along with 5 other Podencos. Her past life has left Hinga with concerns about meeting new people especially men and nervous about new situations. However once in a settled routine she is quite a lovely podenco who is happy to just curl up and sleep in her bed, play with her toys, being a typical pod counter surfaces, tea leaf, don’t leave shoes around, and loves going for long walks.

She has been in foster in the UK for a few months and she is doing really well, just been on a camping holiday.

  • Podenco Friends – Bev Farmer – From the Heart

    Bev Carley and PJ 400 11 8 2019
‘A few days ago I collected PJ´S ashes and he is now back home and his casket is next to Midas. PJ was the last pup to come to the finca that received the kiss of Midas and in the first photo was the day Midas was getting his chemo and we had to bring Carley and PJ to the clinic . Whilst Carley was having her xrays etc we brought PJ in with us and what a precious couple of hours I was sat with them both and we all fell asleep curled up together.

That Friday I was thinking we are going to kick this cancer shit for Midas and he will recover and we will discover why PJ has problems with his liver and will get him better .. But that didnt happen and 3 days later I had to let my beautiful MIdas gain his wings. Then the fight was on for PJ he was a gift from the gods so much wisdom for one so young who made it quite clear he was my boy.
