  • Dumped alive in a bin – like trash – Protectora Scooby to the rescue again

This poor little soul looks like a podenco From Protectora Scooby.

    ‘This is outrageous!

She was clubbed and thrown into a rubbish bin as if she were waste. She is about two years old, is full of injuries, very thin and very weak.

We will inform you of her evolution because if all goes well (we trust that it will be) she will soon need a new home.

    GRA Lucia 2 400
    Sandy says

‘Today we welcomed Lucia, this young podenco was seen by Melanie and Chris last week. They quickly gained her confidence and she came to eat with them, and today they were able to catch her.

At first sight Lucia appears to be in good health, Monday we take her to the vet for a full check up.’

  • New arrivals at Podenco Friends

    Bev Bianca 400 12 2020
    From Bev Farmer.

‘These two arrived this week. Blanca the white one a female 8 years old. Pinto a male 13 years old. Both from the same owner that had them both all these years) we have the original passport ) who signed them over to the perrera 2 days ago. When this happens there is no requirement to wait 21 days before they can euthanize the dogs.

Who dumps a 13 year old dog into a pound just before Christmas and although I really don’t have space I made it happen. No way were these two going to be left there.

Thank you to Jenny Screen for making the drive down to deliver them to the Finca on Christmas Eve. Also to Pam McLeod of Podencos In Need Scotland who donated 100 euros which paid for their release fee and transport and some left over to help towards veterinary fees.

Both settled in baskets with a thick blanket to sleep on. Blanca has a swollen wrist and can’t bear weight on it so I’ve given her some anti inflammatory and pain relief. Pinto has some lumps that need checking. They are both quite stressed so for now just letting them rest.

  • Dogs of Portugal – podenco Faia looking for a forever home

    DoP Faia 400
Usually it is the Portuguese Podengos which arrive at the shelter of Dogs of Portugal. This pretty Podenca Andaluz is Faia, discarded by the hunter and safe with them. Lucky for her she is already reserved. Wishing for the same for all the other podencos in shelters in Spain and the Spanish Islands. See more of her on this weblink.

  • Pet Portraits make a wonderful gift – supporting animal charities

    Viv pet portraits honey 400
Regular readers will remember Viv and her incredible work in rescue in and around Cartagena in Murcia. Especially Viv founded ACTIN and fought for help for the hunting dogs kept in a metal container, amongst many other rescues. She also organised PAES International Conference on Animal Welfare to which I was invited to give a presentation on the plight of the galgos and podencos.

Due to ill health Viv has had to step back from animal rescue, but is helping animals in another way. She is an amazingly gifted artist and on this weblink you can read about and see some of her work.

A portrait of your pet would make a wonderful gift. Get in touch with Viv direct for more information.

Viv’s partner Dan is also a gifted artist – working in mosaic. See more of his work on this weblink

  • Podenca Esca – update from Podenco Friends

    Bev Esca vet 400 11 2020
    From Bev Farmer.

‘Earlier in the week I took Esca to our vets to change her dressing and to check her leg. It all looks good, a lot of bruising but little swelling. The holes at the side of her leg are from when she was caught in the trap. They have closed a lot but it is a concern that no infection enters to the bone. So back to our vets next week to review and a new dressing.’

  • Podenca Esca with Podenco Friends – a difficult decision on her leg injury

    Bev Esca 400 14 11 2020
Update on Esca from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.

A few days ago Michael (from Sighthound Underground US) very kindly took Esca to our vets for a review and check her leg. As soon has our vets removed the bandages it was apparent that the bone had completely broken and xrays confirmed this. Eduardo referred her case to a trauma specialist at the veterinary college in Murcia who responded that afternoon.

When Esca arrived my vets and I discussed the options. Do we try to save her leg and go for surgery straight away which has many risks to the fetus . Or save the puppies and delay her surgery. Has the damage to her leg was already done .That she was anemic and low platelet count which is most likely because she is positive for anaplasma, we decided to delay the surgery. This could buy us some time give her a chance to have the pups and today her bloods showed although still anemic its much better and her platelets are back to normal.

  • Galgo’s Rescue Almeria – help to build 2 quarantine kennels

    Galgo’s Rescue Almeria appeal

It’s necessary to separate new abandoned dogs from the ones who are already saved. It’s important for new arrivals to stay for 2 weeks in a separate place so they can recover and be vaccinated. We already raised an amount for all the materials for one kennel ( concrete, stones, cement, floor- and wall tiles, iron works, roof, …..). So all help to build the second one will be welcome .

See a plan of the kennels and donate through Gofundme on this weblink.
