From Hayley at Akira Dog Santuary. ‘This is the stunning Podenco Cody. He is so beautiful and I don’t know why he always seems to be the one who is overlooked. He is good with dogs and good with people. He walks well on the lead. Just 2 years old he deserves a chance at a happy life. If you can offer him the forever home he deserves, please get in touch.’

Podenco Post – publicising the podencos since 2008
My involvement with podencos and galgos came about in 2007 when I joined a French rescue association and journeyed into Spain with the team to collect my first galga. That was where I also learned that podencos suffer the same cruelty as galgos at the hands of the Spanish hunters. My first blog was Galgo News started in 2008 and one of the first stories I ran was about Podenca Pruna, a tripod who was later adopted in France.
Here’s the story of Pruna.

Podenca Viva – ready to start a new life forever
From Animal Rescue Granada.
Sweet Viva was found in pretty rough circumstances. She belonged to a hunter who left her behind for a long period of time. Some people threw some food to her once in a while until she was finally rescued from this place.
Viva is very sweet, only a bit timid at first while she gets to know a new home. She is 8 years old, a Podenco mix, great on the leash, friendly with people and dogs.
She is currently in temporary foster care with one of our volunteers and doing very well. But she deserves to find a future home where she can spend the rest of her life. Is that maybe your home?

Animal charities desperate for help
This is an appeal from Spanish Stray Dogs charity, but their situation during this time will be the same for all animal charities, especially as, with people not being able to work, there could be more dogs abandoned than ever. Please support your favourite dog charities.
‘We have suffered a huge set back financially as many other charities and families around the world have. Due to the pandemic, our two charities shops in Spain have been forced to shut. This has had a huge impact on the charities finances and is a very very big cause for concern for us for the future of the work we do.
We need your financial support more than ever now’. As the lock down in Spain carries on and on with no real end in sight we face very serious consequences if we cannot find the money we need to provide food, labour and vet care to over 300 dogs a month!

Breaking News! Remember the 90 podencos in Mogan, Gran Canaria? Read on!
90 podencos trapped in cages on Mogan, Gran Canaria. Background here.
From PACMA 6/4/2020
Today I have very good news to give you! After seven years, the Civil Guard has finally rescued those known as “90 podencos de Mogán”.
I tell you how we have managed it so that you too can celebrate it with us and continue helping us save animals:
Since 2013, we have denounced the state in which 90 hounds were in an unclean construction in the Gran Canaria municipality of Mogán. For years, individuals, PACMA and protectors denounced it. In 2015 we did it again and managed to get the animals confiscated, but then the owner fled with the dogs. It was located some time later in Agüimes. There he crowded them again and again we denounced him.
We have not given up for years.

Fern’s Law: Compulsory to scan & check microchips to reunite stolen dogs, cats
Many missing microchipped pets are never reunited as it’s optional to scan & check microchip registration. It’s time veterinary professionals, authorities and rescues checked pet & keeper match on the original database at a pets 1st consultation or yearly checkup. It’s their only chance to get home
Vets can play a valuable role in reuniting missing microchipped pets. We have microchipped our pets with the expectation to be reunited if the worst happens and they are lost or stolen. If just one organisation is not committed to scan and check microchip registration the whole system fails and is not fit for purpose. Legislation is needed to replace half hearted ‘strengthened, best practice recommendations’ VetsGetScanning.co.uk

Tripod Podenca Altea with Galgos en Familia – hoping for a forever home
Snares are illegal in Spain but some hunters still use them on their private land, with devastating results is the dogs on on the scent! Here’s one such beautiful podenca – now a tripod through no fault of her own. She’s with Galgos en Familia in Malaga at the shelter started by Vera Thorenaar.Altea has the story of a real survivor. She was wandering for weeks on the streets of a town in Córdoba with a trap embed in one of her rear paws, while she was shouting in pain. But she was so untrusting in human being that she didn’t let anyone to catch her even known she had so many people trying to. When finally they could rescue her, they took her to the veterinary, who decided the best option for her was to amputate that paw. Now, she is recovering wonderfully in a foster home with one of our best volunteers.
Her temporary family told us Altea is pure love, she is so calm that she doesn’t move from her bed, where she can finally rest without any pain. She loves being covered with her blanket and sleep. With people she is so affectionate, she loves receiving cuddles to feel warm and loved. Also, she is a very clean girl at home.
