    Tierra Blanca Tenerife 300
Tierra Blanca shelter on Tenerife, Canary Islands is a place of refuge for the abandoned and maltreated hounds on the Island. It’s away from the apartment blocks and hotels lining the beaches, a place the tourist doesn’t visit. The only hope for forever homes for some of the dogs, mainly podencos, is on mainland Europe. Here are links to some of their hopeful podencos. Here are a few of their Podencos, scroll down the pages to read abbout the character of these very deserving hounds. Please share.

  • A Black Day for Spanish Animals – 9th February 2023

Black Day for Spanish Animals 400 2 2023
From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends

‘9th February 2023 was a black day for animal welfare in Spain, the Government signed an agreement where both parties promised dignity for all animals. In what will be the ” National Animal Protection Act” the animal welfare law was passed but have excluded the bulls tortured at bull festivities, the millions of animals riddled by hunters, the ones used for animal testing, the ones considered production, such as executed in slaughterhouses, some horses, those used in pilgrimages, dolphins and hunting dogs. What this means Podencos and Galgos plus many other animals in Spain, are not protected they are in a worse position than before.

  • Refugio Kimba – a year saving Spanish hunting dogs

    Refugio Kimba logo 300
    FEBRUARY 1 WORLD GALGO DAY

They say out there, that greyhounds dream their whole life with a life to come, they dream their home, their family, every place, and that dream helps them to be able to get through their reality of abuse and torture. Many make it and others get left in the way.. So when a greyhound comes to your life is not that you have chosen but he dreams.

The end of the hunt comes and with it the end of their lives or the release of others.

Over a year we collect many dogs, but the vast majority are hunting dogs, especially greyhounds and podencos. It is very painful to see how they arrive with their souls totally shattered, atrocious fear and utter distrust for human, not to mention the physical wounds. Dogs that pee and defecate on you when you look into their eyes… We can’t imagine what they’ve had to go through.

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – 2 Podenco Campaneros hoping for forever homes

From Sandy at Galgos Rescue Almeria

    Artillero & Madroño

We would like to put our 2 Podencos Campanero ( Madroño & Artillero) in the spotlight. Meanwhile, all dogs that came to us from the infamous shelter that had to close the doors have arrived safe and sound in their new families. They celebrated Christmas in a warm and cozy home.

Too bad for our 2 Campaneros, they have faded into the background.Unfortunately, there are no requests for Artillero & Madroño yet.

Both are very social and very affectionate.

For both we are looking for homes where there are no small dogs or cats.

They are just big woolly teddy bears!

  • Podencoworld working with Podencos in Gran Canaria

    Podencoworld Ely 1 400 1 2023
WORK IN PROGRESS * PODENCOWORLD TENERIFE * ELY FROM “VIP” DOG TO DOG FOR ADOPTION!

Some poor podencos are so traumatised by their treatment at the hands of the hunters that it can take months and months of patient work to gain their trust in humans again. Ely is one such podenco with Podencoworld Gran Canaria.

‘Now the moment is finally there, Ely is ready for adoption! Maybe not with every family, of course he will remain a special soul with slightly longer instructions than dogs without a backpack, but we have decided unanimously that our dear Ely is ready for the next step!

Ely trusts people more and more and more and now just goes for a walk with new volunteers who are still strangers to him. It takes him a while to trust them, but it’s all good when he sees the belt. The curiosity and especially the will to live of this nice guy wins over the uncertainty more and faster and we really see him grow every day. He wants to so bad! With the right guidance, patience and home routine we think he will thrive very quickly. We really hope that he will get this opportunity with experienced people. He has come so far and wants so badly… he just deserves that chance!

  • Protectora de Animales Arume – Podenco Truan waiting forever for someone

    Truan 1 400 1 2023
Protectora de animales ARUME are appealing for a forever home for Podenco Truan – the ‘Eternal Forgotten’.

‘Truan is a wonderful dog, small size, very young, friendly, loving, sociable, good and grateful. But he was born Podenco, and only for that reason his chances of finding a home are reduced and they make him INVISIBLE.

There is the belief that “hunting” dogs do not “use” to live at home and that they do not adapt, nor are they happy if it is not hunting. And nothing is further from reality (we’re not talking about locking them in a flat but giving them a full life, with safe and quality exits. Any dog can be completely happy living in either a flat or a house with a farm or garden provided the time is given..)

There are more active dogs that enjoy going out to the mountain for a run, others are more of a blanket and couch. Well, the little ones gather all those qualities together!!! Perfect dogs, SUVs, that adapt to any family and enjoy both being out in the countryside and a warm nap in bed.

  • Volunteer at a Spanish rescue shelter

On a very rainy day at my home in the UK it’s that time of year to think about holidays and summer sun. Many Spanish shelters welcome volunteers to help with the care of their rescued hounds and it’s very rewarding. Many first-time volunteers return again and again.

This link is to the galgo and podenco rescue associations by country – many Spanish ones are listed – for both mainland Spain and the Canary Islands. Please contact them direct, you will be welcomed with open arms.
