  • Podencos and cats – compatible?

Fada with cat Mieke Coryn 250 22 2 2014This beautiful photo is of Podenca Canario Fada from Tenerife and in foster with Mieke Coryn in Belgium. Just proving that some podencos can live with cats.

She’s underweight at the moment, Mieke says ‘she was found on the streets with a wounded leg and those people took care of her for 2 weeks. But she was tied with a chain on their balcony because they weren’t allowed animals. After that the organisation took over and she was spayed and stayed at the pension for a few weeks until her flight here.’

Fada will soon gain weight now she is in foster receiving regular meals and love.

If anyone is interested in applying to adopt Fada and offer her a forever home, there is a form to complete on the website Sighthounds2Save – it’s in Flemish/Dutch but your computer may have the option to translate into English – mine does.

I came across this video, of particular interest because it begins with podencos and a cat happily together in a home and moves on to podencos running free off leash. I don’t speak German but have now got a translation of the story on the video.

  • Podenca Amber – Lanzarote to UK – can you help?

The Kennel Club Amber 250 2 2014Regular readers will know that I often mention the podencos waiting in the Canary Islands for forever homes, and that it is expensive to get them to the UK for rehoming. This is an appeal to ask if you can help towards getting this beautiful podenca to her forever home. Laura tells the story.

‘This is AMBER. She is an 18 month old female Podenco. She was found by holidaymakers and ended up in the dog pound. We went and met with them as they desperately wanted to take this beautiful girl home with them.

Plans were made and finances organised but sadly in the last 3 weeks a lot has changed.

  • Sad reality of life in Spain for Podencos – report from Zamorra

The cruelty of the Spanish hunter knows no bounds. I shed so many tears at the stories which arrive in my inbox every week. This story is about Alma, just been rescued and now under the care of Scooby at Zamorra and their vet. Cobie explains.

‘The sad reality for a podenca, a hunting dog of advanced age that no longer “served” and that was found in a state close to dying, completely starved and without any energy to be able to stand up, with severe wounds all over her body, inflicted by beings full of hate and anger and without scruples or feeling.

Almeria perrera 250 2 2014My heart is breaking…every day dozens of podencos on death row in perreras…two brothers here, only 5 months old, in Almeria perrera!! “Murtagh” y “Eragon”
Sex: Boys (brothers) Age: 01/10/2013 contact: adopcionesanua@gmail.com

But if people don’t foster or adopt, then there isn’t room in shelters to save the death row dogs. And a pretty little bitch, no good for hunting, afraid of gunshot, so her owner took her to the vet to be pts – foster home needed and then adoption. In Toledo. Such a needless waste of precious lives…(Spain) 660 43 10 16 or Aspaan Asociación Protectora Amigos de los Animales (photo below)

  • Podencos Ria and Inca – finding forever together in Italy

Alicia Andrews the girls 250Alicia Andrews lives in Italy and has two rescued podencas. She is now involved in helping to rehome podencos, especially from Lanzarote, Canary Islands. She tells the story of how she became involved with the podencos.

‘When my last remaining dog died back in January 2013, he left a huge hole in my life. I’ve loved animals from the time I was born into a household where there were always rescued dogs and birds around. So when Peanut left me to run over the rainbow bridge and join his mother and siblings (or, at least I like to think that he did), I felt “lost”. Who was going to leap excitedly around my legs when it was time for a walk?
