  • Podenco Friends’ podencos living with cats?

More from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends on Josephine the cat!

‘Lots of people ask if Podencos can live with cats. I never had a cat for obvious reasons and none of my Podencos were cat friendly.. But then came Josephine, I found her, a kitten about 6 months old by the rubbish bins .. It was close to Christmas no local cat rescues had space. I’m thinking this poor kitten is not safe with us but left with no choice introduced her to the 1O podencos one by one.
I needn’t have worried she soon showed them who is boss and was welcomed into the family.
I never imagined a cat could live with all our Podencos. Josephine proved me wrong.’

‘I know, I’m not like the others, I need to be more careful because I was born with a wrong leg and I need to fix it when I grow up and this is why… that I’m not like the others.

But I have two ears…. two beautiful eyes and most of all a heart… just like the others … who can give you so much love and show you how grateful I would be to come into your life forever. I believe in you, and I wait for you. With love BONNIE.

  • Podencos – a most loyal breed

Podenco love life leader poster 400
Regular readers will know that in December last year I adopted a very timid 8 year old podenca called Rosely. It’s been a long journey introducing her to the outside world away from breeding babies for a Spanish hunter.

She follows me everywhere – literally! – but is getting over her separation anxiety, with her housemate blind podenco Bo. She sleeps on her bed at the side of mine every night, nowadays she’s usually there before me! Until last night. My other half was out at an evening meeting and she refused to come to bed until he returned, barking a welcome on his arrival.

So I joked with him that in future he’d better not be too late, because instead of his wife waiting up for him, it will be her dog!!

  • Tail Torrox Dog Shelter in Malaga Province – plenty of podencos looking for forever homes

    Mona 400
Torrox is on the Costa del Sol but not a place the tourists tend to visit, as it has apartment blocks rather than big hotels. But like most of the rest of Spain it too suffers from too much animal abandonment and that’s where the Tail Torrox shelter comes in. Founded in 2008, they currently have plenty of podencos hoping for forever homes, on this page you can read all about them.

This tiny is Mona. Mona came in with her puppies. She is estimated to be born 14.2.2018 and weighs 8.6kg and 40cm in height. She is typical of the breed, shy but sweet and timid with strangers. She plays well with a mixed group of dogs. She has tested positive for leishmaniosis. If you are interested in offering a forever home, email info@tailtorrox.es about her.

A wonderful and very loving podenco who enjoys the company of people and other dogs, both small and large. He even gets along with geese, and we already know what a character they have!

At the end of the day he falls deep in bed where he recharges the batteries for the next day.

The family that decides to adopt him will enjoy a companion 10.

If you want to adopt Leo, write with your details, location and phone number to info@galgos112.com or send the adoption form that you can find on our website.

  • The Story of Galgo’s Rescue Almeria

    GRA Marlos face 400 6 2022
In 2015 Sandy and John Cortebeeck sold up in Belgium and moved to Almeria to open a kennels. As with all good intentions, for dog lovers in Spain, the mass abandonment of galgos and podencos takes over everyone’s life. Thank goodness there are people willing to give up almost everything to help these amazing dogs, treated like rubbish by the sub-human Spanish galgueros.

  • Adopt a Granny Podenca

    Granny podenca 1 400 8 2022
    From Polly Mathewson.

‘ADOPT A GRANNY! Granny podencas are like your favourite teddy bear as a child. Their fur was a bit thin from so much cuddling. But you never found a dearer friend.

Our friends at the refuge “La Sonrisa Peluda” near Malaga have a number of “Granny Podencas” who desperately need to get out of their shelter and into loving families. They vary from age 6 to older and have a variety of health conditions that are well controlled with medication but they need to be in the cleaner environment of a gentle and loving family home to really thrive and re-find some of their youthful joy that is still there in them.

  • 3 Podencos safe with Galgos Rescue Almeria

    GRA 3 podencos 400 8 2022
Earlier this month Galgos Rescue Almeria, along with other rescues, were involved in taking to safety over 70 dogs living in terrible conditions in a shelter which the authorities closed down. These 3 podencos were among the dogs GRA took to their shelter.

‘We picked up these 3 podencos in terrible condition and now a period of recovery and healing can begin for them, as well as the galgos we took too. They’ve been in an unimaginable filthy shelter for God knows how long and unsurprisingly they all have Anaplasma and Erlichia, fleas and ticks. Fortunately it can be treated but also can’t be underestimated. Untreated it can also be deadly.

They’ve now had a shower, for one boy we need to visit a groomer because his coat is in bad shape. You can see flea infestation needs treating urgently too. Named Madroño, Artillero and Teddy.

Any help with vet fees will be gratefully received.
