  • Meet blind podenco Bocelli – new member of our family

    Bo face 1 400
Last week I introduced you to our new family member Podenca Andaluz Rosely. This week blind Podenco Bocelli has joined our family. We’ve both lived with dogs all our lives but for both of us, a blind dog is a new experience. He was apparently rescued from life on a chain in a horrible place in Lorca, southern Spain. It’s not a good area for Spanish hounds. Here’s a bit about his character.

Meet handsome Bo. He is as good as blind, weights approx 25kg and is 7 years old (as of July 2021). Bo wants to lay in his bed all day until it’s dinner time then suddenly he’s bouncing around and barking like a 6 month old puppy. His energy level is generally fairly low but he loves to potter around outside. At mealtimes he gets excited. He is good with other dogs.

  • Cuidad Animal Refugio Animales – lots of podencos needing forever homes

    Ciudad Animal Refugio Animales Abandonados

    WONDERFUL POWER

El Podenco is the typical dog we usually see from the highway wandering around the field, which is confused with a galgo. The one who lives locked in a junction for years, the one who belongs to a rehala.

That hound dog no one wants.

    Podenco means light feet.

Its stylized figure, its agility on any ground, its incomparable tracker, its visual and audible sharpness, its ability to adapt to any temperature. All of this has made from the podenco an essential “tool” for hunters.

The podenco has always been used for hunting, throughout its history.

But let us talk about the other side, not the one we are used to seeing, but the other, the good one.

  • Mogan podencos – Gran Canaria – fosters required for the oldies

    Mogan oldie 1 11 2021 400
From the association Adopta un Amico en Gran Canaria.

‘We need TEMPORARY HOUSES, for the 8 old podencos of the Case “90 Podencos of Mogan”.

After a year and a half since being rescued and taken to the kennels, we have been given permission to remove them from the kennel and keep them in Casas de Foster until the end of the Court trial.

Many have arthritis, blindness etc….. they don’t deserve to stay in a cage, now comes the cold, humidity etc..

WE ARE LOOKING for people with patience, they are dogs with fears, phobias, they have never been in a house and they do not know what a caress is….. and much less what it is to sleep warm.

We don’t know when the trial will end, of the 84 dogs that were removed from the hunter only these 8 had a chip…… the others (minus Siso, Bimbo and Ananda) are already adopted or on probation with families.

Having a chip they have not been able to look for family or get out of the kennel so far.

  • PACMA fighting for animal rights in Spain – blocked by the hunters!

    PACMA galgo 400 11 2021
    The latest news from PACMA

‘In October 20231 the Ministry of Social Rights and the 2030 Agenda “presented” its preliminary draft of the Animal Protection Law at a public event. A month and a half later, the only thing that is published on its website is a draft of the preliminary project, and the hearing and public information process has not been opened.

From the beginning we warned that this law left out most of the animals: the victims of livestock, hunting, experimentation laboratories, bullfighting … But also, at this rate, the legislature will end without the animals having a animal protection law at the state level, the false promise of Podemos at electoral time. Once again, animals are the most neglected, relegated to the background and vilified.

  • Podenca Andaluz Rosely – our new arrival

    Face 2 400
Regular readers will know that since moving from France to the UK at the beginning of 2021 we sadly lost our last 3 Spanish hounds, galgos Polar and Bracken, and my little pocket rocket Podenca Bebe. It was a shock to lose them so quickly – Polar with lymphoma, Bracken with a bleeding tumour on his lungs, and Bebe at 18 years old had never lived on her own and just gave up on life. We took 2 months out to grieve and visit family and friends in the UK but, having both of us grown up with at least 1 dog in the house, we missed having a canine companion.

Now our travelling days are over and this week Podenca Andaluz Rosely joined the family. She’s bigger than little Bebe, about 12 kgs, and 6 years old. Unusually for a rescued Spanish hound, her Pet Passport shows she was chipped and vaccinated from birth. Of all the hundreds of galgos and podencos I have helped the French rescue association bring back to France for foster and rehoming, there has never been one with such a vaccination record!
