Podenco Friends – Bella on the mend
‘After a thorough assessment at our vets Bella’s neurological responses are good pupils equal and reacting normally. Did a full blood panel and everything is fine no indication of any infection, kidney liver function normal.
They are treating her for canine idiopathic vestibular syndrome (see separate post) Bella is coming up to 11 years old but she is a very fit and active dog you would never know she is a senior. She had 5 injections at our vets and they have sent her home with 2 types of antibiotics and Prednisone. With instructions to keep a close eye on her that she doesnt have a fall and hit her head, however to encourage her to walk on a lead.
She is kind of out of it at the moment, I took her for a potter round the paddock on a lead, she turned her nose up at her normal dinner, so got some chicken and rice cooking for her.

Refugio Kimba – podencos hoping for forever homes
Refugio Kimba is one of the oldest animal shelters in Spain and they are still working hard for the Spanish hunting dogs. Here’s what they say about the Podenco.‘Andalucian pods, Ibicenco, Canario, Campanero… so many types.
When we talk about hunting we don’t only refer to galgos, the podencos are also used by hunters until they no longer serve them and they get rid of them.
Podencos are smart, tender, loyal, they are special dogs, only those who have ever owned one will be able to understand. They are also one of the most abused and used breeds and that we also have to fight for them.’

Axarquia Animal Shelter, Torre del Mar – Podenco Kiwi for foster
From Diana McClelland – Kiwi’s story.URGENT FOSTER APPEAL : KIWI (AAR 2498)
Little Kiwi was rescued at 8 weeks old, with wonky legs. X-rays showed that her femurs in her back legs hadn’t formed properly and she needed to grow and develop to see if she would need an operation.
Now 12 weeks old Kiwi has gone from strength to strength – the improvement in her legs and mobility is fantastic. She’s still a bit wonky but she gets herself around brilliantly and loves to play and run and cuddle and has a great quality of life and is pain free.
She doesn’t know she is any different from any other puppy and she doesn’t let her disability slow her down. She’s a small girl girl with a big personality – can you help us to help her by fostering? AAR will provide everything you need and will cover all her vet bills and treatment.

Akira Animal Sanctuary – Podenca Lolita hoping for a forever home
‘Lolita is a sweet girl has been with us for a couple of years. She is definately eager and waiting for her forever home. She is ready to get back out into the wide world and start enjoying life with a family.
Lolita is easy to walk on the leash and enjoys a little roll on the grass. She has grown massively in confidence and has a gentle soul. She is good with children . She does however only really enjoy the company of male dogs. She really deserves a chance and so we hope someone will see her posts this week and fall in love.
She will need a bit of patience, as mentioned above Lolita has lived for several years at the shelter. So important that her potential adopter accepts she will need time to decompress when she gets home. We think she will quickly blossom and even more of her cheeky personality will shine through. Lolita has been sterilised, vaccinated and has a microchip and passport.
Please contact us on akirashelter@aol.com or whatsapp/call +34 657 689 567 for more information, to arrange to meet him or apply to adopt. Lolita can travel if required please contact us to discuss.

PACMA – Spanish political party fighting for the rights of Spain’s animals
This is a weblink to introduce the new team at PACMA, leading the fight to protect Spain’s abused animals. This is a weblink to an article about the Government of Castilla-La Mancha wanting to promote the violence and cruelty of hunting among young people and women.
Also in March 2022 PACMA urged the Junta de Andalucía to stop promoting, protecting and shielding hunting in the community. We have sent a letter to the Governing Council of the Junta de Andalucía to stop their efforts to promote this cruel and violent activity. Weblink to this article.
This is the translation of a PACMA article about dog-fighting in Spain. Galgos are sometimes bred as bait dogs to be used in this cruel and barbaric activity.

Separation anxiety in dogs – what to do
My recently adopted podenca Rosely (Rosie) is my shadow. Which is great to a certain extent, but not good when left. I’ve never had a dog with separation anxiety problem, probably because most of my dogs have had companions. However, when Rosie first arrived, she did not have a housemate, so we had the howling and door scratching when left at night. I’ve never allowed dogs in bedrooms but now we’re in a bungalow, I’ve given in and Rosie has a bed at the side of mine for overnight sleeps.I do a couple of mornings voluntary work with Riding for the Disabled and also an animal charity shop. On both occasions she showed serious signs of distress – luckily my other half was at home with her.
Her new housemate blind Podenco Bo arrived a week later and so over the weeks during the 3 months she has now been with us, she has adjusted to being left with him, although my other half says she sits at the patio doors looking for me. The greeting I get on my return home is wonderful, I must say.
So I’m slowly working on her separation anxiety but can now appreciate what a problem it must be for those people who are not able to have more than one dog.
