  • Podenca Blanca – a happy tripod with Podenco Friends

    Bev Blanca vets 400 4 2022
From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.

‘Blanca has severe arthritis in her elbow. We have kept her comfortable with meds but it’s now affecting her wrist. We looked into the option of having the elbow joint replaced with an artificial joint. A specialist clinic here in Spain was able to do the procedure. However with all the MRIs needed including one to map out an accurate image of the joint for the surgery, manufacture of the joint in the USA, 3 months post care surgery, the cost was in the region of 8,000 Euros. With no guarantee it would work.

She does use the leg especially when she is running but more and more she is holding it up. It’s never going to get better and the pain management meds are now becoming less effective.

  • From Spain to Wales – 2 happy podencos

    Dave Owen EDITH 400 31 07 (1)
Dave Owen lives in Wales, UK, and has 2 adopted podencos. He’s busy writing a story featuring a podenco but, in the meantime, he has sent us this story of his podencos and how he came to adopt them.

‘Not long got back from walking the dogs on the beach, Maude loves to chase her ball and when it’s warm enough she enjoys swimming.

Edith on the other hand isn’t keen on water but does have a tentative paddle with Spook her westie friend. We have only recently considered it safe enough for her to be let off her lead because she doesn’t have a focus like Maude and is more interested in the massive rabbit population located in the sand dunes but she’s not allowed in them because of the adders. She does chase the rabbits in the garden but they have escape routes which are always kept open.

  • Separation anxiety and fear with Podenca Rosely

    Rosely garden 400
Regular readers will know that at the beginning of December I adopted Podenca Andaluz Rosely, who had spent most of her 8 years breeding babies for a hunter. She had no experience of life in the big wide world and came full of fear. Not the first time I’ve had to deal with a fearful Spanish hunting dog – as my galga Carmela, rescued from a perrera at 4 years old, was traumatized on arrival at our home. It took 2 1/2 years before she became what I would term ‘a normal dog’ if there is such a one!! So once again we’re having to deal with a dog fearful of life as a whole, and men especially. Once again my husband has to cope with a dog backing off from him, hiding under the table and so on.

A strong part of a podenco’s character is loyalty and Rosely has it in abundance towards me! Which initially caused problems insofar as I do voluntary work 2 mornings/week and she had to get used to me disappearing for a few hours. The kitchen door into the rest of the bungalow had to be kept shut and she was only allowed into the garden to the toilet on lead. Night times were a problem too, and for the first time in my 70+ years of living with at least one dog, she is allowed to sleep on a bed beside my own – NEVER on my bed!

Dear Friends and Family of the “In Kennels & In-Visible” dogs – our little “rolling” pack of Spaniards we have taken under our wing together, some heartening news for this beautiful soulful girl who many of you know, but maybe not all of you. Our “Invisibles” are generally dogs without a sponsoring rescue association who we help directly to get out of a large commercial rural kennels near Tobarra in Albacete province where they have landed up for a number of reasons. And of course new dogs keep on landing up there and in desperate need… the terrible reality for countless animals across Spain.

  • 2 podencos rescued in a terrible state – please donate to vet fees with Spanish Death Row Dogs

    Judge podenco 3 400
From Lynn Judge and Spanish Death Row Dogs.

    ‘RESCUED!

Phew what a stressful afternoon it’s been!!! Thank goodness they BOTH finally took the bait and entered the cage. We couldn’t rescue one and leave the other. We have had to be so patient and wait for couple weeks trying to rescue them. They are in an awful state and scared to death so goodness knows what they’ve experienced in their short little lives. But we want to change all that and now the hard work begins…….

BUT we can’t do it without your help. We will need to do full bloods, tests and maybe X-ray for the poor one that is limping. Please please we are now begging for funds to help these two babies. They don’t know it yet but their lives are about to get a whole lot better. We will keep you updated with further news.

Anything you can spare would be fantastic. Thank you’
