  • Saving the Lanzarote Podencos – TheKennelKlub & Podenco Friends

Lanzarote podencos 400 1 31 8 2016Lanzarote… the podenco is the primary dog for hunting on the island many are abandoned handed into perreras the majority dont make it.. Adoptions are far and few between due to the lack of flights overseas that will carry dogs. We want to make a difference, Laura Johnson of the Kennel Klub on Lanzarote and Beverley Farmer from Podenco Friends are working together to save these six podencos recently handed over by their owners or found abandoned … the clock is ticking please help us save Kesha, Safina, Hania, Nala, Leyla, and Bruno.

Bruno and Safina are out of the perrera and now in private kennels where they have space to run a comfortable bed, people to play with and they can see daylight. Laura and the team on lanzarote was there to transport them to their new residence we will post a video shortly. Thank you to everyone that has donated this allowed us to get these two out and will be seen by the vet. It appears Bruno has some issues with his balance, too early to speculate what the problem may be. Hopefully have some answers in a few hours after he has seen our vet.

  • Rescuing from a Perrera – advice from Mo Swatek of Pro-Galgo International

Jerez podenco 390 26 03 2011The debate about rescuing from a perrera when not living in Spain or the Canary Islands continues to rage. Here are words of advice from Mo Swatek of Pro-Galgo International, who recently drove 250kms to a perrera to rescue podencos and galgos with a short kill date, only to find there was no kill date for the dogs!

    RESCUING FROM PERRERAS
    **********
As the emotional blackmail and the sharing without checking the real situation is getting worse and worse, here some Suggestions how to reserve dogs from perreras without being cheated, overcharged etc.

    1. Do not work with private people if money is involved. Pay only to animal welfare associations or directly to the PERRERA.

    2. Always insist in the name and exact location of the place.

    3. Do not send dogs in residencia or foster care without full details of the person or residence Incl address, phone, legal permits etc. Be aware that many people make a living with private illegal fostering and you risk your dog’s being decommissed if there are no permits for dog boarding for more than 2 dogs. Most villages do not permit more than 5 dogs or pets in general per household!

  • The law about keeping a dog chained up

Sweden can't tie up a dog HypeDojo 410In France where I live, many dogs spend their lives attached to the end of a 2metre chain. Many are border collies, used as ‘guard dogs’ in rural farms. As long as the dog has food, water and shelter, there is nothing one can do to help the dog. So this poster about it being illegal in Sweden to keep a dog like this made an impression on me. In Florida I read that you can’t tie any kind of animal up outside for you will get fined, even jailed if the situation is extreme and the animal will be taken away.

Every country should adopt this law, applicable to whatever animal including dancing bears (currently a petition against this in Pakistan) and elephants in the Far East used for tourists and ‘entertainment’.

  • Toxocara Canis – why people should clean up after their dogs/cats

We’re looking after our neighbour’s dog whilst they are away for a few days. She lives in the back garden with access to a large cool barn. We know they are not very good at cleaning up the garden of dog mess, but were horrified when we went in, to find just how much there was. What makes this worse is that they entertain in the garden…and even worse, they have a 2 1/2 year old son who plays in there!

For anyone who doesn’t know about the illness Toxocara Canis, find out more on this link. Please make sure everyone you know with a dog is aware of the illness.

Needless to say, we’re cleaning up the garden whilst we are ‘in charge’.

  • Podenca Calypso – no longer an Invisible

Video of Podenca Calypso, rescued by Bev and Warren and now in their care at Podenco Friends. They do incredible work with these fabulous hounds and are always in need of people to run fundraising events etc to help with vet fees and even better, offer a forever home.

  • Hunters outside the garden – could you live with this?! Many in Spain have to.

Hunters podencos 400 14 8 2016This is what Jane and Alan at Pepis Dog Refuge now have to face for the next few months. Bloody hunters on the hillside with their podencos and guns, upsetting the rescued dogs in the shelter. Bastards. As Jane says, it could be that some of these podencos will end up in the refuge when they either get lost or dumped.

  • 90 podencos of Mogan, Gran Canaria – one year on

90 podencos Mogan 400 8 2016Do you remember this heartbreaking story? This is the latest update – you will be as heartbroken as me to read that no matter how hard the team try to get some action, they are no further forward.

‘These 90 podencos continue today (11-08-2016) in the same situation of abuse after three years after being condemned by a local protective. These images are repeated today in the new location after a metal plates under the sweltering heat because the owner responsible fled to another municipality in the month of December 2015. The matter is now in the hands of the examining court no. 1 of Telde after two and a half years of municipal bureaucracy.

  • Spain – create a national register of animal abusers – sign the petition

Please sign and share. It’s a petition suggesting creating a Spanish national register of animal abuser. Maybe if it happens, then more people will be willing to make denuncias and more people will be prosecuted. Wouldn’t it be great if it could work on the galgueros!
