  • Letter to Senor Galguero revisited

In March 2013 I published this ‘Letter to Senor Galguero‘. Sadly all it expresses still applies today. The Hunting Federations have not improved matters – no controlled breeding of galgos, no mass abandonment, still keeping them in dark underground locked bunkers….what has changed is that there are now millions of Spanish people who are thoroughly ashamed of the bad press the hunters bring to their lovely country and protest vociferously every year throughout major cities in Spain.

Fermin Perez Martin of Scooby Medina presented a Spanish translation to the Federation of Galgueros when he was in dialogue with them to try and improve the situation. Needless to say, the galgueros refuse to acknowledge they cause a problem!

We must keep supporting those fighting the cruelty perpetrated on galgos by the galgueros in any way we can.

Please feel free to share the ‘Letter’but ensure that I am credited as its author.

  • Happy Podenco family

Janice Ball pods 2 400Looking through my years of folders of podenco photos from 2007 when I first started my blog, I found this delightful one of 4 of those adopted by Janice Ball in the UK.

  • Lucas and Maya – 2 lucky podencos sharing a forever home.

Jude 2 pods 400This is the story of how someone who had never heard of podencos is now the proud adoptant of 2! Jude tells the story.

We adopted Lucas, our Podenco Maneto, in 2012 through Podenco SOS. We’d made the decision to get a dog a while before and wanted to adopt a rescue dog rather than buy from a breeder or a pet shop. We’d been in a lot of contact with the RSPCA and the Dogs Trust but they weren’t able to rehome any of the dogs in their care with us and we ended up on a waiting list.

My wife, Seiko, found out about podencos and the wonderful rescue organisations online. I’d never heard of podencos before! We enquired with Podenco SOS about a few of the dogs that they’d put on their facebook page but they’d all just been found homes. They suggested we visit Lucas, a Podenco Maneto, who was with a foster family in Surrey, a short drive from our home in Brighton.

  • Galicia, Spain – penalising people who help stray animals

There is a law which allows authorities to penalise people who help stray animals. I published about it recently when Malaga put up posters warning people they would be fined 500 euros for helping stray animals! Galicia province is now proposing to enforce the law, so please sign this petition to protest about it. The petition will be printed off and handed to the authorities.

  • Podencos in Need Scotland – join in the fun!

Podenco play school 2 400I received a request from a Podenco adopter living in the Edinburgh area who wanted to meet up with other podenco people to share knowledge, experiences etc. Pam Mcleod of Podencos in Need Scotland got in touch with me to tell me about the Dog Play School in the area. Here’s the story of how it came about.

‘2 years ago I spent the day with 500 dogs in the perrera Tierra Blanca on Tenerife, and so the dream was born. I met Pacita, who, at 11 years old, had been found, heavily pregnant, caught and brought into the perrera, only to deliver 9 pups the following day, all but 2 of whom died to parvo virus. Pacita was still distraught at losing her pups and my heart broke for her. I met Pasha and Nico as well as many nameless hounds and fell in love with them all.

The next month was spent on a vertical learning curve about the practicalities and logistics of rescuing a dog from another country, and getting together the funds to fly Pacita from Tenerife to Edinburgh. Flying Fleeces was born to help raise funds and, after we got her home in February, PINS was born and, with it, the mission to make Scotland, Podenco-Central.

  • Podencos in the forest

Lovely video of podencos enjoying themselves in the forest. Wishing all podencos could know happiness like this!

  • Vero – podenco rescued from the highway

This is a short video of little Vero, which I took on my visit to Pepis Dog Refuge in September 2016. Jane Brian received a call from her vet that there was a puppy injured in the village of Pedrera and could the refuge take him. I went with Jane to collect him from the vet surgery and here he is in the ‘hospital’, plucking up courage to come outside to play! He now has his forever home in the UK, named Dobby.

This is one of the many cases Jane and Alan deal with every week and why we continually need to donate and raise funds to pay the vet bill. Here are some ideas which you could do to raise funds and awareness and how to donate.

TRISHA is this month’s Dog of the Month – still waiting for a forever home. A lovely dog who doesn’t want to spend the rest of her life at the refuge…

  • The Ugly Face of Mogan, Gran Canaria – Caro de Perro on TV 19/7/2017

90 Podencos mogan TV prog 4007 2017The fight to help the 90 podencos of Mogan, Gran Canaria, continues. On Wednesday evening this week 19th July 2017 a programme will be show on TV on the subject. The group teaming manager writes this. ‘Wednesday evening 4 TV will show in its program “A Cara de Perro (the face of the dog)” the case of the 90 podencos. After weeks of contact with the producer, the seriousness of the facts, the great documentation and evidence, they did not hesitate to include it in this last program. For those of you who are still there, still fighting for these dogs, I will continue to do all that is in my hands to make the largest possible noise. This program is dedicated to them, the victims. Thank you for supporting!’

    April 2017 Update.

At the plenary session of the City Council of Agüimes Buenas held in April 2017 the opposition made in the section “Questions and” a consultation on the issue of the ’90 podencos”after nearly 17 months. Here is a video of the meeting; if any Spanish speaker can translate the discussion, it will be appreciated.

A reminder of the appalling situation first publicised about the 90 podencos of Mogan in January 2016.
