  • Podenco prison visiting on Lanzarote

    KennelKlub India prison 400 26 1 2019
Wonderful news from Laura Johnson of The Kennel Klub on Lanzarote.

26/1/2019 – Today we are privileged to have been able to go in to the penitentiary centre in Tahiche with one of our dogs. This is all thanks to prison officers, especially Urko, who has spent almost a year organising and making it possible. It’s a fantastic opportunity and experience for inmates and dogs alike.

The inmates get some time out of the ordinary prison routine, they get to learn, they are able to interact with dogs who always make things better and it’s a therapeutic group activity.

INDIA, the Podenco who accompanied us today, also got a break from the kennel routine, she got to socialise and she got lots of cuddles and treats!

  • Canary Islands – hell on earth for the podencos

Below is a translation of the newspaper report on this link.

They denounce the terrible conditions of these dogs in the ravine of El Sobradillo: “They are tied with chains of half a meter”.

The president of the Animal Rescue Brigade Orion demands the mayor of the capital of Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, to take action on the matter

Tied with strings of just one meter and in quite questionable conditions. This is how a neighbor has located these dogs in the middle of the ravine of El Sobradillo, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, due to the constant barking and howling. Faced with such insensitivity on the part of those responsible for allowing animals to survive in this way, the complainant has decided to record the situation to spread a reality that, unfortunately, happens every day in the Canary Islands.

  • Invisible fencing for dogs? The Whole Dog Journal writes.

Further to my recent piece about using invisible fencing for a Podenco, this article on the subject dropped into my Inbox this morning! I’ve sent the link to the man who raised the question.

  • Podenco covered in bites

Podenco covered in bites 2 400
This poor podenco was recently rescued covered in bites, bloated from the wounds and with hardly any teeth. I have wondered if it was used a bait for dog fighting. I haven’t come across podencos being used like that, as they are not generally submissive; however I have in the past come across galgos being used as bait dogs because of their submissive nature. This poor soul was in Huelva, southern Spain.

  • Podencos and invisible fencing?

I’ve received an email posing a question to which I cannot respond, as I’ve no experience of invisible fencing.

The enquirer has used invisible fencing with success with previous dogs, he used a professional dog trainer for the training. He has neighbours who did their own training.

He is considering adopting a podenco, so 2 questions.

    A puppy or an adult?

Would it be suitable for invisible fencing?

Do any of my readers have experience of podencos and invisible fencing? If so, what result and how was the dog trained, how old was it etc.

  • Canicross – ideal for podencos

Adoptants of podencos will know that generally they are very active and intelligent hounds and need more exercise than their galgo compatriots in the Spanish hunting hell. So here are some links about Canicross and Bikejoring, plus some photos.
